Roadbook
The route starts at the city harbor of the seaside resort Ueckermünde. From here, you cycle on roads with bike paths via Bellin and Warsin to Altwarp. In this old fishing village, you will find a small natural bathing beach and the northeasternmost harbor in Germany. Here you can grab a fresh fish sandwich before boarding the rustic cutter "Lütt Matten" together with your bikes, which takes you in about 15 minutes across to Polish Neuwarp (Nowe Warpo). On board, besides fresh sea air, you can also get a cup of coffee and homemade cake for little money.
Arrived in Neuwarp, the smallest town in Poland by the way, a detour to the opposite beach promenade or a visit to the marketplace is worthwhile. There you will find the life-size bronze statue of the painter Hans Hartig (1873–1936). Like many artists, he appreciated the seclusion of Neuwarp. He liked to relax here between the Neuwarper See and the Szczecin Lagoon and found inspiration. He also actively helped restore the medieval town hall. In gratitude, the city administration appointed him an honorary citizen.
Leave Neuwarp behind and follow the main road towards Szczecin until the turnoff "Rieth." From now on, an asphalted bike path leads through the forest to the German-Polish border. After about 2 kilometers, you reach Rieth, an idyllic spot in the middle of the "Nature Park at the Szczecin Lagoon." Situated between forest and water, here hides the self-described smallest local heritage room in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Here you learn what life looked like around 150 years ago. The families of Rieth collected items from barns, cellars, and attics, including kitchen utensils, fishing gear, and other tools that were often handed down over generations. In the courtyard café of the former dairy, there is homemade cake and coffee. Alternatively, you can unpack your own picnic at the cozy bathing area with a climbing frame.
From the observation tower at Neuwarper See, you look out over the Riether Werder. On this bird sanctuary island, rare species such as the river tern and snipe meet with marsh harrier and kestrel, red kite, and common buzzard.
A well-paved forest trail then takes you back to Warsin, where you cycle back on a familiar route via Bellin about 4.5 kilometers to Ueckermünde.
