Heidenheimer Brenzregion
About 20 kilometers take us along the Lokalbahn cycle path from Gerstetten through Gussenstadt, Waldhausen, Schalkstetten and Stubersheim to Amstetten. Always close to the railway tracks, we discover a vast landscape of fields and meadows, quiet forests, and picturesque villages. Between May and October, the Lokalbahn takes us back every Sunday and public holiday. Immediately afterwards, we also enter the Lonetal, a route that amazes all nature lovers. From there you can cycle from Setzingen via Hausen back to Gerstetten, completing a total of 60 kilometers. Those who want more can take the Lonetal to Hürben to the Charlottenhöhle and along the Hohenlohe-Ostalb cycle path into the Eselsburg valley. Our return route to Gerstetten is already indicated there.
Note for families:
In Stubersheim, upon reaching the crossroads, one should follow the description to turn from Schalkstetter Street into Ziegelwaldstraße, but only experienced mountain bikers should turn towards Katzensteige / Sonnenberg. Because the first part of the forest path drops steeply and due to the loose coarse gravel surface, it is recommended only for experienced riders and definitely not for families with children. Here there is the option to continue on Ziegelwaldstraße and the barely used country road to a signpost exactly two kilometers further and then follow the signs to Amstetten.

The cycle path along the Lokalbahn starts at Gerstetten station and leads as a theme trail with many interesting information on railway history to Gussenstadt. From Gerstetten station, we follow the tracks to the stop. Here we turn left and follow Osterstraße to the intersection with Bismarckstraße. We continue straight and reach Nikolaus Church, the oldest church in Gerstetten. Continuing straight, we follow Blücherstraße until we turn right onto Berliner Straße. At the intersection with Wallbacher Straße, we keep left and shortly thereafter reach the outskirts of Gerstetten and the second theme panel. Our route now runs parallel to the Lokalbahn tracks until Gussenstadt, where we encounter several theme panels. In Gussenstadt, we cross the railway tracks and follow the main street into town. At the intersection with Bahnhofstraße, we turn left and shortly after reach the picturesque station building.
From Gussenstadt station, we ride right up to the main street and continue left. The red cycle path symbol with a locomotive marks our path. We continue straight, reach the outskirts of Gussenstadt via Brechhülbstraße, and cycle straight on the field path. At the crossing asphalt road, an old Roman military road, we turn left and at the third crossroads turn right towards Waldhausen. In town, we meet Gussenstadter Straße and first follow it left and shortly after right to the railway tracks. Directly after crossing, we keep left and ride parallel to the tracks towards Schalkstetten. Following the Lokalbahn cycle path symbol, we first turn right then twice left through the fields until we reach a large silo. Our path continues right towards the south. Shortly before Schalkstetten, we cross the railway tracks and enter town on Hausstraße. A short detour to the museum to the left is worthwhile. On the well-ridable forest path, one should only turn left onto a connecting path after 1.6 kilometers to return to the path described as Lokalbahn cycle path. This leads directly along the tracks to Amstetten station. At the end of the street, we enter Schillerstraße, which we follow right out of town. Before the railway tracks, a gravel path branches left leading into the forest. In several curves, our path descends steadily to the forest edge at Stubersheim. Via Ahornweg, we reach Schalkstetter Straße, on which we cycle right and shortly after left into Ziegelwaldstraße. We follow Katzensteige and Sonnenberg streets to the outskirts and continue straight towards the forest. In the forest, our path crosses the railway tracks and ends downward on a small asphalt road. Here we go uphill right, over the tracks, and immediately after turn left onto a narrow forest path. Along the rails, we now ride slightly downhill to Amstetten, where we join Hofstetter Straße. We follow the road to the main street, cross it, and reach Amstetten station via the street "Am Bahnhof", where our route ends. From the station, the connection to the Lonetal is signposted.
