Roadbook
(1) 0.0 km Unteruhldingen Harbor/Stilt House Museum
The bike tour starts in the harbor area of Unteruhldingen. Those arriving by car cycle from the parking lot following the signs there in three minutes. Then you start at the Stilt House Museum, following the Lake Constance Cycle Path to the pilgrimage church Birnau, which is visible from afar. The short, steep climb through the vineyards up to the baroque jewel is rewarded not only with a great view of Lake Constance and the Alps.
(2) 3.9 km Pilgrimage Church Birnau
The route continues across the Birnau parking lot and through the underpass of the B31 to the Birnau estate. Now follow the Prelate's Way through the forest – past the Salvator Cross – with a short steep descent, spiced with a tough counter-ascent to the Mendlishausen estate, home of Barbary macaques and storks.
(3) 6.8 km Mendlishausen estate (Monkey mountain)
For the onward journey to Salem, take the cycle path along Tüfinger Straße uphill, but already turn right at the forest edge onto the paved forest road and cycle in lively ups and downs past some Salem monastery ponds to the street junction in front of the striking, tree-crowned Leopoldsberg. Turn left here, then right downhill before the walls of Salem Castle to the Salem forester's lodge and further to the information center of Salem Castle.
(4) 10.8 km Salem Castle
Continue straight ahead through the flat valley of the Salem Aach to the neighboring Mimmenhausen. A museum near the route is dedicated to the important stucco artist and sculptor Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer. His works are often encountered on this bike tour. His workshop produced, among other things, the furnishings of Birnau, including the “Honey Licker”, stuccos in the cloister and the choir stalls of Salem, as well as works in the New Castle Meersburg. In Mimmenhausen, turn left at Café Zartbitter towards the station, then right into Zur Öle street. Cross the railway line, then cycle leisurely along the Stefansfelder Canal until the cycle path signs point to Buggensegel and onward via Wehhausen to Bermatingen. The cycle path bypasses the historic village center, but a detour to the pretty, tower-crowned half-timbered town hall is worthwhile. The local wine taverns are also a good reason for a detour.
20.1 km Bermatingen (sports ground/EDEKA market)
The further course of the round through Linzgau follows Meersburger Straße to the Bermatingen district of Ahausen. At the entrance to the village stands the small late Gothic St. James chapel from the 10th to 12th century. Ride straight through the village and continue on the cycle path alongside the country road to Baitenhausen. The next destination is already visible from afar. However, it still costs a few drops of sweat until you finally stand in front of the small pilgrimage church above the Salem valley after a long serpentine road.
(5) 25.0 km Turnoff to the pilgrimage church Baitenhausen
After the short detour to the pilgrimage church, the last climb of the day is almost done. Continue along the road towards Meersburg, soon again on an accompanying cycle path. Finally, you can roll easily up to the Meersburg Obertor.
(6) 28.1 km Meersburg Obertor
Cycling is not allowed in the steep alleys between the upper and lower town. So you have to push your bike or use the (busy) B33 to get down to the lakeside and the ferry port. From there, end the day with a leisurely lakeside bike ride back to Unteruhldingen.
