(1) 0.0 km Waldshut, boat dock
The tour to Küssaburg starts with a boat trip over the Rhine. Arriving in the Swiss Full, cycle along the main street to the intersection with the marked bike path EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route/National Cycle Route 2. Turn left and follow the bike path to Felsenau. Here, the Aare flows into the Rhine. Actually, it should be the other way around, because from a hydrological perspective, the Rhine is the lesser of the two against the Aare. The Aare, with an average water flow of around 590 m³/s, is not only the largest tributary – ahead of Neckar, Main, or Mosel – but also a quarter larger than the Rhine itself. However, the Rhine is a few kilometers longer, which grants it the status of the main river. Do not cross the Aare but follow the lively flowing green river upstream. After Gippingen, cycle along the shore of the Klingnauer reservoir to the Aare bridge in Döttingen.
8.0 km Döttingen, Aare bridge
After the bridge, keep right and follow the Studenland–Töss–Roman Route 60) to the neighboring Tegerfelden. If you continue to follow these signs here, after about 80 kilometers, you will reach Steckborn. However, this bike tour turns to the first mountain of the day. So turn left at "Wartegg" in Tegerfelden, go under the main street, and cycle uphill on the bike path marked Rigi-Reuss-Klettgau Route 77 on "Alte Zurzacher Strasse" away from traffic. The goal after 100 meters elevation is the Zurzächerberg, followed by a thrilling downhill ride on the road, partly separated by bike lanes, to the spa town of Bad Zurzach.
(2) 15.6 km Bad Zurzach, Verenamünster
Until Kaiserstuhl, the EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route/National Cycle Route 2 sets the direction again. Orientation is simple: follow the main road from Verenamünster, turn right at the charming town hall into Schwertgasse, and continue out of town until the signs point to Breitestrasse. If you want to visit the Roman fort Tenedo, briefly roll through the railway underpass to the customs office and climb the stairs to "Kirchilbuck." Afterwards, the Rhine cycle route runs on farm and cycle paths upstream of the Rhine, sometimes following the railway line, sometimes the Rhine valley road via Rekingen, Mellikon, and Rümikon to the gates of Kaiserstuhl and down through the pretty town to the Rhine bridge.
(3) 28.0 km Kaiserstuhl (AG), Rhine bridge
Past Rötteln Castle, briefly uphill to the entrance of Hohentengen. Immediately turn left at the top and cycle along the country road downstream again, past Engelhof winery, to Lienheim. The second mountain stage starts in the town center and leads about 200 meters uphill on Küssnacher Straße to the height of Rügihau. The following descent briefly gives a chance to catch your breath, then you have to pedal again at the entrance to Küssnach: A shortcut via the street "Am Weiher" leads in three switchbacks directly up to Küssaburg, saving some elevation meters.
(4) 38.6 km Küssaburg castle ruin
After a steep descent on Schlossstraße to Bechtersbohl, you can coast further to Oberlauchringen and on to the Lauchringen outdoor pool. The path to Tiengen then follows the South Black Forest Cycle Route/Black Forest Panorama Cycle Route along the right side of the Wutach to the covered wooden bridge in Tiengen. Those who like can make a detour into the old town here.
(5) 49.4 km Tiengen, Wutach bridge
The route stays faithful to the right bank of the Wutach, crosses the mouth of the Schlücht and meets the Rhine Cycle Route at the Hochrhein business park. Unfortunately, you now have to follow the foot and cycle path along the B 34 to the Waldshut customs office. There, cross the B 34 and follow the cycle path signs to Rhine Camping. The final spurt is conciliatory. At the outdoor pool, it goes back on the Rhine shore path to the starting point and if desired, still into the Waldshut old town.
(6) 55.8 km Waldshut, boat dock/old town
