Dreamlike landscape on the ancient Danube
From Ehingen via Munderkingen to Lauterach and back to Ehingen via Schlechtenfeld
Dreamlike landscape on the ancient Danube
Such a landscape is hard to find: The ancient Danube left small Alb valleys during the Ice Age like the Kirchener Tal west of Ehingen. This relaxed 34-kilometer route west of Ehingen takes us to the brewery in Berg, a beautiful stretch along the Danube, around Munderkingen, through the Great Lautertal into the Kirchener Tal, to natural gems like the Klammerfelsen and the warm springs of Algershofen.

We first head towards the Danube Cycle Path. A very idyllic, flat section along the Danube Cycle Path upstream leads us through meadows and floodplains to Rottenacker and further to Munderkingen with its charming historic old town.
In the village of Algershofen, warm springs emerge from more than 170 meters deep; the picturesque water at the southern edge of the village has been used as a bath for over 100 years.
At Untermarchtal, we leave the Danube, pass through Lauterach near the famous Great Lautertal, cycle past the lime kiln museum and Mochental Castle into Kirchener Tal. The landscape here is sensational.
Along the Klammerfelsen, the path runs through an idyll of orchards and limestone rocks. Hard to believe that the Danube once flowed here in ancient times and everything looked like the Everglades in Florida. There were even supposed to be giant alligators.
Those who want can take a small detour north of the western edge of Schlechtenfeld to the picturesque village of Mühlen. Here nature in its purest form awaits, with a renatured stream with a small lake, a wildlife enclosure, and an open view to the Bussen.
Back into Ehingen, the route passes through countless plum trees, along the bike path through the residential area “Am Ramminger,” over the B 311 bridge back to the starting point at Wolfert Inn. From here, it is not far to the marketplace and the pedestrian zone, where you can nicely end the day.
