Herrenberg is the ideal starting point for a bike ride. From here, there are bike paths through the Gäu region, heading toward the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest. From Herrenberg’s market square, the route leads to the Affstätt neighborhood and then continues across the fields to Deckenpfron. The route then heads downhill to Calw, where you reach the Nagold Valley. From Calw, the route follows the well-marked Nagold Valley Bike Trail. The trail runs mostly right alongside the river, is primarily paved, and is flat except for a few very short climbs. Passing through Hirsau (if you have time, be sure to visit the monastery) and Bad Liebenzell (with a very beautiful spa park and cafés), the route leads through the forested valley to Pforzheim, where the Nagold flows into the Enz. Herrenberg is a historic half-timbered town on the edge of the Schönbuch Forest. Its landmarks include the collegiate church and the picturesque market square with its well-preserved half-timbered houses. Calw is best known as the birthplace of the writer Hermann Hesse. The lovingly restored old town, with its shops and restaurants, makes the city a popular stopover for cyclists. Pforzheim is known as the “Goldstadt” (City of Gold) and is the traditional center of the German jewelry and watch industry. At the confluence of the Nagold, Enz, and Würm rivers, the tour ends in a city with interesting museums and good rail connections.
