Characteristic of this challenging bike round tour are several ascents, rewarded with the best views of the surroundings. The route leads from Nandlstadt via Tegernbach to Rudelzhausen. At Furth, a stop at the Haselnusshof Neumeier is worthwhile. The next station is the market community Au i. d. Hallertau with its lovely town center and the well-known castle brewery with beer garden.

From there, it goes via Osseltshausen and Oberhaindlfing to Wolfersdorf at the southern edge of the Hallertau. Again and again, the best views, small churches, and other treasures invite for a stop. The route runs on the Bockerl bike path via Attenkirchen back to Nandlstadt. Worth seeing are the historic village center of Attenkirchen, the neo-Gothic town hall, as well as the forest swimming pool in Nandlstadt.

    Author’s recommendation

For a refreshment break, the idyllic forest swimming pool in Nandlstadt provides a perfect spot.

    Roadbook

The starting point is the central town hall square in Nandlstadt. We head north and leave the market town via Hausmehringer Straße. At the town exit, the first long ascent demands a bit of strength—a little preview of the topographical conditions during the entire round trip.

Hardly at the top, we rush downhill to Hausmehring. Here our road curves right for 2 km to the well-known pilgrimage church St. Sylvester von Airischwand, which in earlier centuries was the destination of many believers.

However, we turn left in the mentioned right curve towards Tegernbach and continue going north. Passing isolated farms and a golf course, we soon reach Tegernbach. Until recently, this small village still had its own small brewery—unfortunately, the brewer emigrated and now brews his tasty brew on the Golan Heights north of Israel. In the village, we turn right, and from the village exit, we use a brand-new bike path that runs along the right side of the road. Passing a riding stable, we reach Kohlmühle, where we keep right. We pass the small village of Furth and arrive at the B 301. Here, we briefly enter the district of Kelheim. We turn left and follow the bike path, now back in the district of Freising, to Rudelzhausen. We first go under the B 301 and follow Lindenstraße on the left towards the town center. At the next junction, we continue straight south on Schulstraße to the district Kirchdorf. We follow Schulstraße until the end then turn right past the church, leaving the district on Friedhofstraße, keeping left. We now reach Iglsdorf, continuing straight to the district Enzelhausen.

You can still recognize the embankment of the former Holledauer Bockerl, which ran regularly there until the 1970s and once brought thousands of workers to the hop harvest in the Holledau. A small part of the route is still preserved: a private person has acquired the old Enzelhausen station, and you can see various locomotives and wagon material from earlier times there.

After this technical detour, we turn southeast and cycle on the old railway embankment towards Au, which has been wonderfully paved as a smooth asphalt bike path since 2008. Over two small bridges, we reach the B 301 again. Here, a look to the left at the famous Holledauer Schimmel chapel is worthwhile: legend has it that two "big-nutter" Holledauer lads once locked up a stolen white horse to wait until the theft was forgotten. Unfortunately, the matter dragged on too long, and the poor animal starved in the chapel. This local tale was even processed into a theater piece.

We have no white horse to care for—our concern is the safe crossing of the federal highway. Then it rolls on finest asphalt southwards until we meet Maria-Eich-Straße in Au (sign: Au 1 km). We turn right towards the town center and at the end of the street turn right onto Klosterberg street, following it in a left curve until we reach the B 301 again. We keep right and follow the federal road until at a fork, we turn left onto the St 2045 towards Pfaffenhofen / Ilm. At this point, caution is advised due to partly busy traffic.

At the end of Au, we leave this rather busy route by turning right towards Osseltshausen at the level of an equestrian tournament area. We now cycle through a small valley—hop gardens line both sides, and if it is summer, it feels like cycling between green walls. The largest hop growing area in the world is here, and the green gold is exported worldwide. We pass a remote farm, the Kleintonhof; then the road rises slightly to Osseltshausen, where we turn left into Talstraße and soon leave the village again. Over Neuhub, a narrow road leads us to Holzhof.

After the first houses, we turn left and roll downhill until we reach the main road in Hirnkirchen. We follow it about 100 m to the right and then turn left to Trillhof. Behind the remote farm, the asphalt ends, and a field path takes us along a forest section to Piedendorf. Southwards, we leave the village and turn left after about 500 m. Over a small bridge, the path winds steadily uphill until we meet a proper road again in Oberhaindlfing. In Unterhaindlfing, we turn right towards Wolfersdorf. In the center of Wolfersdorf, we turn left into Berghaselbacher Straße. After a beautiful descent, we cross Kreisstraße FS 27 at the height of two or three remote farms and have to pedal hard again because there are several meters of altitude to overcome uphill to Thonhausen. In a long left curve, we pass through the village and go downhill again into the next valley. At Haidhof, we cross the B 301 and shortly afterwards turn left onto the Bockerlbahn bike path, which steadily slightly ascends to Attenkirchen. After an underpass, we "enter" the village in a residential area and shortly afterwards follow Dekan-Götz- and then Bahnhofstraße straight ahead. At the end, we take the narrow path uphill and turn left at the top into Asamstraße. At the B 301, we turn right and, after a short descent, take the roundabout right towards Moosburg / Nandlstadt. Behind the town sign, we turn left at the first opportunity towards Meilendorf. Over Brudersdorf, it goes to Meilendorf, where an organic horticultural business offers products for self-harvest directly from the field. Behind Meilendorf, we keep right, and in the next village (Aiglsdorf) we turn left. One last, somewhat exhausting ascent takes us over the hamlet Höllbauer directly back down to Nandlstadt, where we find our way back to the starting point via Freisinger Straße without problems.
