Touristikgemeinschaft Odenwald
"Experience the home of green spelt by bike," promises enjoyment in a double sense. Various holiday regions are connected by this cycle path. Linked to it are interregional cycle routes that can ideally be integrated into the existing cycling network. With the connection to the Odenwald Madonna Cycle Path, the Main-Tauber-Franconian Cycle Arc, the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Path, the 3-Countries Cycle Path, the Limes Cycle Path, as well as the Kirn Valley, Kessach Valley and Sculpture Cycle Paths, excellent combination options open up for the cyclist to discover the holiday landscapes to their heart's content by bike.
The name is program, because along the route of the green spelt cycle path there are numerous reminders of earlier green spelt production and the annual green spelt festivals are known beyond the region.

What is green spelt?
The origin of green spelt goes back to the year 1660. Green spelt was discovered by chance due to crop failures. Because of rainy, damp, cold summers, the grain spoiled before ripening. This led to famine, which caused the farmers to come up with the idea to cut the green husk (commonly known as spelt) already during the milk ripeness stage, that is, 14 days before full ripeness, and dry the grains in the oven. However, since good bread could not be baked from green spelt, it was mainly used as a soup ingredient. In earlier times, green spelt was harvested using sickles, involving the entire family. Today, mowers, threshing machines and combine harvesters are used. Afterwards, the ears are dried on the so-called dryer for about three to four hours. Franconian green spelt has been protected Europe-wide since 2015 and has been included in the European register of origin.
