The Dummersdorfer Ufer nature and bird reserve is a beautiful piece of land and hosts the largest collection of rare plant species in Schleswig-Holstein. Explore it on a relaxed bike tour from Travemünde.
Time travel on the Stülper Huk peninsula
The destination, Stülper Huk, is best explored on foot along the signposted circular trail. This small peninsula rises 16 m above the Pötenitzer Bay over the Trave and probably once served Count Adolf II as a strategic site for a castle to monitor trade at the Trave estuary. At that time, this site was protected from "Alt-Travemünde" by ditches and ramparts, the remains of which can still be seen today and are among Travemünde's most important archaeological monuments. A memorial stone with a stylized ship hull now marks the location. After the destruction of Alt-Travemünde in 1181, the castle was rebuilt further downstream at another location. Over the centuries, this developed into Travemünde as we know it today. However, one thing you can still do on Stülper Huk is enjoy the magnificent view over the small and large passing ships. Now, cycle further along the elevated shore path at the cliff edge to the Dummersdorfer Ufer nature reserve. Here you will also find an observation tower — with a bit of luck, you might see one of the rare cormorants. Please make sure to always stay on the marked paths to avoid disturbing plants and animals.
