The Feininger Cycle Route is dedicated to the Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956). On his beloved bicycle, he explored the Ilm Valley and filled his sketchbooks with countless motifs in Weimar and the Weimar region. The cycling route connects city with countryside and culture with nature. It opens sightlines into the green expanse of the landscapes and shows the perspectives of Feininger's famous church motifs, such as the church in Gelmeroda. Glass panels explain the context, and the translucent images allow a direct comparison with the original. The route mostly runs on paved paths and includes inclines.

The cycle route is dedicated to the Bauhaus artist Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956), who travelled mostly by bike for over three decades in Weimar and the Weimar region and sketched countless churches, bridges, and villages. Many of these works later became world-famous. A total of 6 glass panels can be found on the well-signposted circular route that refer to the artist’s motifs next to the churches.

"The villages, probably over a hundred, in the surroundings are magnificent! The architecture (you know how I approach it!) suits me perfectly, so stimulating, sometimes so immensely monumental! There are churches in godforsaken hamlets that are among the most mystical things I know from so-called cultured people!"

    Author’s recommendation

A light sculpture in Gelmeroda makes the first highway church in East Germany shine in Feininger’s colors at night (Thu - Sun).

    Roadbook

We recommend starting at the Bauhaus University Weimar, where Feininger taught. Pass by the city palace, follow the Ilm Valley Cycle Route through Ilmpark to the small stone bridge in Oberweimar. Cycle via Taubach to Mellingen: The St. George Church in the town centre inspired the local art installation, the “Feininger Tower.” Follow the Ilm Valley Cycle Route past fish breeding ponds to Oettern. Here you leave the route below the Ilm towards Buchfart. After a short, steep climb (10%), you reach Vollersroda: Feininger’s favourite motif here was the chancel tower church. Continue to the church in Possendorf, often painted by Feininger even after he had returned to the USA. The highlight of the route awaits you in Gelmeroda. The slender, distinctive tower of the Feininger church is visible from afar. Visit the exhibition about Feininger’s life and work. The last stop is the “St. Mauritius” church in Niedergrunstedt. Cycle leisurely through the Kirschbach valley and end the loop back in Weimar – the birthplace of the Bauhaus.
