Enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over Lake Neusiedl, far into the Hungarian plain. The route leads through picturesque villages with cellar lanes, past vineyards, pasture meadows and thousands of cherry trees – which depending on the weather transform the region into a sea of blossoms from early to mid-April. At the same time as the cherry trees bloom - which also give this region its name - yellow Adonis flowers, dark purple pasque flowers, pink and white delphiniums, purple grape hyacinths as well as yellow and purple dwarf irises appear and turn the dry grasslands on the southern slopes of the Leitha Mountains into a colorful sea of flowers. For Pannonian conditions, this route is somewhat more demanding with short, steep sections. Numerous display boards provide information about cultural and scenic highlights.

Cherry splendor as far as the eye can see! At the foot of the Leitha Mountains, thousands of cherry trees bear their ripe fruits in June. High season for cherry lovers and foodies who don’t want to miss out on the tempting red cherries. A stop in one of the 5 cherry variety gardens is recommended. Over 40 different, refined products from the small red fruits are offered for sale in gourmet shops and guesthouses.

We recommend culinary stops to pleasure cyclists at the many inns and wine taverns in the region, which offer regional, delicious dishes and exquisite Leithaberg wines depending on the season. On the menus of the region’s gastronomy businesses, alongside traditional sweet dishes such as cherry cake, cherry pancakes or cherry strudel, you can also find innovative creations such as cherries in prosciutto packets, sheep’s cheese on cherry-strawberry-tomato ragout or duck breast with cherry-thyme vinaigrette. And if you prefer to create your own cherry delicacy, richly filled cherry baskets are offered for sale on street corners.

In autumn, when the grapes ripen, you can observe the activity of the vintners. Guided wine tours and tastings are then on the program of events in the World Heritage Nature Park Neusiedler See – Leithagebirge.

    • Cherry experience tours

The magic of the cherry begins in April with the cherry blossom, from June you will be culinarily spoiled with fresh fruits. Culinary delights are not only a big topic during the cherry harvest; cherry specialties like single-variety fruit spreads, cherry juice, sparkling cherry drinks and much more are available all year round. Therefore, the cherry experience tour is also worth a visit in autumn when the Leitha Mountains turn colorful. We combine entertainment, conviviality, and nature experience. You will hear exciting stories about the Leitha mountain noble cherries during a walk and learn about the cultivation methods as well as the production of cherry products. At the end, we "taste" the variety of sorts, eat cherry strudel, and drink sparkling cherry juice.

    Safety information

Since many cycle paths are agricultural access roads, agricultural traffic should be expected there. Mutual consideration ensures that these paths remain pleasant to use for everyone.

    AUSTRIA

There is a bicycle helmet requirement for children up to 12 years old. Reflective vests are not mandatory at dusk, darkness or in poor visibility, but certainly advantageous. Here is the Austrian bicycle regulation.
