Bad Mergentheim
In the forest between Bernsfelden and Stalldorf, you come across two Celtic fortifications. The rampart that surrounded them can still be seen. Between Stalldorf and Riedenheim at the edge of the forest, there is a large princely burial mound.
However, the most impressive legacy of the Celts is undoubtedly the Oppidum Burgstall. Through the Tauber valley and two gorges, the 123 ha site is naturally accessible only from the south. It was protected from attacks from the south by a largely preserved rampart about 5 km long and 6-8 m wide with a ditch (399 – 250 BC). A section of post-slot wall was reconstructed on the "Kirchweg" between Burgstall and Finsterlohr.
By the way, in Burgstall you can visit a flax breaking hut where flax fibers were once extracted to make linen (tours by appointment with Mr. Friedlein, phone: 07933 631).
