Heidenheimer Brenzregion
The very exciting cave route for families with children leads as a circular route through the Brenz valley into the Lone valley to the fascinating caves. Along the way, you will also encounter some old noble residences.
From Sontheim station, the route initially takes us through the Brenz valley. You can already take the first break at the Brenz adventure spots. Below the ruins of Gussenburg, we leave today’s Brenz valley to follow its old valley course. At Hürbe, the Cave Adventure World with the Charlottenhöhle cave and a playground is available for an extensive rest before continuing below Kaltenburg into the Lone valley. The Vogelherd cave (currently closed) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Jura." A beautiful playground and rest area is always accessible. The historic village of Stetten enchants. When the Württemberg knights hold their tournament on the last weekend of July, the entire village immerses into medieval times. On our way to Niederstotzingen, there is still a stop at the forest playground for the little cyclists before it then goes relaxed back through the Donauried plain.

From Sontheim station, we cycle along the railway tracks to Bergenweiler and meet the Brenz cycle path. The cycle path signs with a cave symbol show us the way. In Bergenweiler, we encounter the Brenz adventure spot with a water playground and information about hydropower. We pass through Bergenweiler towards Hermaringen, cross the railway tracks, and cycle through an idyllic meadow valley where the Brenz with its old waters has created many biotopes. Halfway, we could shorten the route and cycle via Burgberg directly to Hürben to the Cave Adventure World Charlottenhöhle. On the normal route, we first go to the Brenz tower, and immediately after that, there's a quaint spot with a willow tent for resting by the Brenz. Past Hermaringen station, we leave the town via Friedrichstraße. Just before the Netto supermarket, we cross the street and railway tracks and cycle below the Gussenburg towards Hürben, which lies hidden behind the Kagberg. Watch out here: after the biogas plant, we must turn right and follow the partly paved field path.
We circle the Kagberg on its left side towards the Lone valley. A gravel path leads us to the Kaltenburg ruins. On the right side, a small family paradise opens up for us. The Cave Adventure World with the Charlottenhöhle invites us to a long rest. The longest walkable show cave of the Swabian Jura is just as ready for discovery tours as the adventure playground, the Cave House with catering, and the interactive show area "Cave.Human.Nature." You can splash around in the small Hürbe. To reach the grounds, you have to walk a bit alongside the street. For children, it is safer to cross the meadow at the motorhome parking area. At the cycle path junction, this leads not towards Charlottenhöhle but towards Hürben.
Then the tour continues into the Lone valley. Below Kaltenburg, which is worth a detour on foot, the tour leads on the lightly trafficked connecting road directly to the famous Vogelherd cave (currently closed). We are here in the World Heritage area "Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Jura." However, we leave the valley of the caves towards Stetten and Niederstotzingen and shortly before Niederstotzingen are rewarded with a nicely located rest area at the forest edge, the forest playground. Then it goes down into the town of Niederstotzingen. At the bottom, we cross the country road to Sontheim and reach the railway crossing. There we turn left towards Sontheim and ride along the railway tracks. On the left rises the Albrand, and on the right lies the Danube valley. Therefore, it is not far from here to the Danube cycle path. Arriving in Sontheim, we follow Friedhofstraße to the main street. Here we go left through the town back to the station.
