Starting at the historic Großer Galgenteich, a remnant of the mining era, the loop leads through quiet forests, idyllic valleys, and scenic highlands. A particularly stunning view can be enjoyed from the summit of the Stephanshöhe, one of the 14 eight-thousanders in the Eastern Ore Mountains. Border towns, expansive meadows, and the 905-meter-high Kahleberg create a true low-mountain range atmosphere—diverse, scenic, and full of riding fun.
Author’s recommendation
The BLOCKLINE offers a multifaceted biking experience. It spans 140 kilometers through the unspoiled nature of the Ore Mountains, divided into three spectacular loops. With its starter package, it’s ideal for families and anyone who wants to combine biking with adventure.

Start at the Großer Galgenteich in Altenberg and follow the Blockline signs toward Schellerhau. At the next intersection, turn left onto Alte Zinnstraße and ride leisurely through the forest. Follow the trail to Schellerhau and continue toward the Julius-Schmidt-Steig. Continue along the Julius-Schmidt-Steig and enjoy the fantastic view from the Stephanshöhe at the top. Follow the signs downhill through the Pöpeltal valley to Schönfeld, always following the green “B.” Ride past the small forest swimming area and continue across meadows and fields to Neuhermsdorf. In Neuhermsdorf, keep to the right and continue cycling to the border town of Neurehefeld. Follow the border to Rehefeld-Zaunhaus. Before heading back to Altenberg, we recommend a detour to the Kahleberg (905 m) for one last view. From there, follow the Blockline signs back to the starting point at the Großer Galgenteich.
