Scenically beautiful cycling route in the Hausruck and Attersee area, which can be easily done car-free and runs entirely on very low-traffic roads.

The bike tour starts at Attnang-Puchheim station. Through many small villages and hills, we initially ride toward Ottnang am Hausruck, then along the Hausruck (highest point of the tour: Gerhardsberg) and reach by a loop just before Puchkirchen am Trattberg. From there, we cycle via Timelkam to Seewalchen am Attersee, further to Aurach am Hongar, from where we return via Wankham to Attnang-Puchheim.

    Author’s recommendation

The "Fisch Otto" grilled skewer fish place is not exactly on the route, but a local char freshly grilled is a "poem".

    Roadbook

We start from the west side of Attnang-Puchheim station (so NOT from the bus station!) and ride on the so-called "Alte Attnanger Straße" toward Schwanenstadt to the village of Tuffeltsham.

Now comes the first uphill. We cycle to Pühret, at the following junction keep right and reach Altensam. Shortly after, turn left, but in the middle of the village (easy to miss!), immediately turn right uphill to Hofstätten, descend through beautiful high forest to the railway, but just before, turn right along the tracks and uphill again to Wolfshütte.

In the village, turn left, first uphill, then downhill, under the railway and onto the bike path that runs along Pilsbacher Straße. Here, briefly ride right (toward Ottnang), then at the first opportunity turn left again, uphill to Lehen, here briefly left (Güterweg Scharedt), but after a few meters immediately right again uphill to Hub and scenic until reaching the federal road ("Wolfsegger Straße").

Here left again and immediately right, quickly uphill to Gerhardsberg (highest point of the bike round). Downhill via Ainwalding to Brunau. Cross "Hausruck Straße" and uphill to Ehwalchen. Here sharply left at an acute angle, downhill to Wolfsdoppel and Mitterschlag, shortly after turn right to Vorderschlag and down a serpentine road into the valley floor of "Trattberg Straße", which we reach at a railway crossing.

Now briefly right, but immediately left again to Ach and Staudach. At the top, you reach the "Power Tower", a lookout tower with climbing wall. Past this, shortly after sharply left and via Brandstatt to Jochling. Here "Most Schurl’s Mostheuriger" invites you for a hearty snack. (https://www.most-schurl.at/).

Shortly right to "Jochlinger Straße" and on this via Stöfling to Timelkam station and into the center of Timelkam. Here, pay attention to the signposts and ground markings that guide through the town to the "R6 bike path".

On this path over Unter- and Obergallaberg to just before Weiterschwang. Here turn left (Güterweg Reichersberg) and ride via Reichersberg to Kraims. Shortly right and immediately left again, steeply uphill to Neubrunn and via Roitham to Seewalchen am Attersee. From the town center to the Ager bridge (wonderful view over Attersee), on "See Straße" to the end of Schörfling am Attersee, before a parking lot (horse stud), left uphill and downhill through the town to the "Salzkammergut bike path".

On this over Steinbach, Hainbach and Riedl to Aurach am Hongar (recommended stop at Gasthaus Riedl). Past the inn on the right, then keep right again, on the marked bike path over Raschbach to Neudorf (country inn with general store), further to the Regau motorway entrance and cross it to Hinterbuch.

Now first right and before the motorway bridge left to the village Mairhof and very prettily via Hattenberg to Wankham. Here first onto Bräugasse, cross the Ager to Zeislau on a narrow bridge, uphill to Ahberg and now only a short distance into the center of Attnang-Puchheim with its train station.

    Public transport

    Public-transport-friendly

Attnang-Puchheim is a railway hub. Almost all trains - including most Railjets - stop in Attnang-Puchheim. For this route, it is therefore ABSOLUTELY recommended to travel by train (especially since the car parking at the station is almost always hopelessly overcrowded).

    Directions

Attnang-Puchheim is located on the B1 and the A1 is also nearby (Regau exit).

    Parking

Free parking at the station (though often overcrowded).

    Equipment

The route is technically easy, but to follow it without mistakes, careful route planning the day before is worthwhile. Either have a printed map with the route prepared or (better) download the track to your phone or outdoor GPS device.
