Bike Buddies Burgenland - Rally 7
The starting point is Podersdorf beach, which is not only distinguished by its swimming access and gastronomy but also boasts a large playground, ample parking, and good cycling infrastructure. This makes it the perfect place to start the tour stress-free – and later also to end it leisurely.
The route is flat throughout and well signposted. It passes through the typical Seewinkel landscape: wide open fields, impressive wind turbines, and a calm natural backdrop. Along the way, there are plenty of things for children to discover – such as various animals like white donkeys, Cameroon sheep, and Mangalitsa pigs. Another highlight is the Hölle observation tower, which offers a beautiful view over the region.
With about 22 kilometers in one direction, this route is the longest of the Bike Buddies rallies. Thanks to the flat terrain, numerous rest areas, and mostly car-free paths, it is still manageable – even for children from around 8 years old. The paths are either paved or finely gravelled, making them comfortable to ride.
In Illmitz, a short stop at the Bartholomäus spring is worthwhile, where fresh, clear water is available to refill – ideal for a short break.
The return journey follows the same route back to Podersdorf. Once there, the beach invites you to end the day relaxed – whether swimming, playing, or enjoying a well-deserved ice cream after the shared bike tour.
Author’s recommendation
Plan the tour so that you allow enough time in Podersdorf for the playground and a break by the lake – this motivates the children and gives them space to play around. Be sure to bring enough water and small snacks, because even though the route is not long, the extensive sections require some endurance. A helmet is mandatory for everyone, and a small pair of binoculars can help spot interesting birds and nature details along the way!
Tip for parents: Don't forget sun protection and plenty of water. The route is mostly flat but may have little shade on hot days – starting early is worthwhile!
