DISCOVER the two lakes that surround the town of Gräfenhainichen - the Gremminer and the Gröberner Lake. Both are results of the mining industry from the early 60s to the 90s and their recultivation.

During a bike tour around the Gremminer Lake, a visit to the city of iron – FERROPOLIS – is worthwhile. Industrial history comes alive here. Five open-pit giants, two of them accessible, wrote history and stories that guests learn about during a guided tour of the site. The bones of the forest elephant found in Gröbern can also be viewed on site. At the Gröberner Lake, also a former open-cast mine, is the find site of the pachyderm. A stop at the Waldelefant restaurant, part of the See- und Waldresort Gröbern, is also recommended.

Between the bypass of the two lakes, the historic town center of the Paul-Gerhardt town invites you to linger. Follow in the footsteps of the well-known hymn poet Paul Gerhardt. Whether the book printing museum or the historic carpentry and blacksmith workshop with living quarters from around 1900, there is something for young and old. At the local tourist information, guests receive not only information about the town but also benefit from a bike path service point with air pumps and repair kits for cyclists.

On the grounds of FERROPOLIS, there is a digital bicycle service point as well as e-bike charging stations.

    Author’s recommendation

Impressive steel artworks line the path from the Gräfenhainichen city balcony towards Ferropolis and Radis. Since 2004, students of the Ferropolis School in Gräfenhainichen have been designing and creating these sculptures in art class. Every year, the art trail is extended with new works. Another project by the Ferropolis students extends from the city balcony towards Radis. On 10 interesting information boards, the history trail recalls the former village of Gremmin, which had to give way to the lignite open-cast mine in 1982.

Children especially enjoy the playground in the city of iron. Here they can become excavator drivers themselves and romp on playground equipment modeled after former lignite mining machines.

Directly on the Gröberner Lake is now the See- und Waldresort Gröbern, where you can swim and fish. Stand-up paddling is also possible; bicycles, rowboats, canoes, and rafts can be rented. A large children's playground, a rock garden, and the wildlife enclosure at Seekate are available for young guests. Courses can be booked at the diving school by the lake.
