250 vertical meters ascent, 1,700 vertical meters descent in a magnificent setting!
How does that work? Quite simply – the ascent with the Ankogel cable car makes it possible.
The return trip to the starting point by train through the Tauern tunnel gives this great route an additional appeal.

Comfortable ascent with the cable car, a short climb, magnificent views of the Ankogel, the "Tauern Queen" Hochalmspitze, and the elegant pyramid of the Säuleck, and then the fantastic descent "on the other side" into the Anlauftal – ski tourer's heart, what more could you want?

The route from the Ankogel cable car to the Radeckscharte with the subsequent descent to Böckstein station is one of the great classics around Mallnitz.

The return trip from the north to the south side of the main Tauern ridge is by train; trains run hourly, each 20 minutes after the full hour (10:20, 11:20 etc.)! Attention: Tauern closure from 18.11.2024 to 13.07.2025, more information can be found here

    Safety information

The uppermost part of the descent is steep. Secure skiing technique is as necessary as absolutely safe conditions. We therefore recommend this route only for spring with corresponding conditions!

    Respect your limits -
5 rules for responsible snowshoeing or ski touring:

If available, stay on marked routes; always observe signs, protection, conservation, and restricted areas

Consider wildlife: avoid feeding areas and immediately and calmly withdraw when seeing an animal

Avoid young tree cultures (under 3 meters); ski edges can cause significant damage to trees

Do not leave any waste behind

    Avoid noise

    Roadbook

From the mountain station of the Ankogel cable car on the piste to the first sharp right turn, here almost level, roughly along the summer path, heading towards Ankogel down to below the Lassacher Kees (skins not needed or not sensible up to this point). Now begins the (short) ascent up to the Radeckscharte on the main Tauern ridge.

Alternatively, it is relatively easy to continue ascending to the Kleine Ankogel (3,097 m) or, significantly more challenging, to the Große Ankogel (3,252 m - possibly needing an ice axe and crampons).

The view of the surrounding 3,000-meter peaks is already a magnificent experience, and the descent through the "Anlauftal" down to Böckstein that follows is simply overwhelming. Exactly 1,700 vertical meters offer everything a ski touring or freeride enthusiast could wish for: steep slopes in the upper section, picturesque, deeply snow-covered alpine meadows, and finally the "sprint" directly to the station in Böckstein. From here, the return trip to Mallnitz is by train through the more than 8 km long Tauern tunnel – certainly a curiosity. Regular free ski buses run from Mallnitz station to the valley station of the Ankogel cable car!

    Public transport

Mallnitz is perfectly accessible without a car thanks to its Intercity train station (express trains every 2 hours).
Public transportation is especially recommended for this route: start at Mallnitz station; take the free ski bus to the Ankogel cable car; and the return is in any case by train.

Return from Böckstein station: hourly, 20 minutes after the full hour (8:20, 9:20, etc.) - Attention: Tauern closure from 18.11.2024 to 13.07.2025, more information can be found here

    Directions

On the B106 (Mölltal federal highway) to Obervellach, from there via the B105 to Mallnitz.

2 options: drive to the station, then take the ski bus to the Ankogel cable car. Or drive by car directly to the Ankogel cable car and after the route take the ski bus back from the station to the car.

    Parking

Large parking lot in the area of the Ankogel cable car.

Because the starting point is at the Ankogel cable car and the endpoint at Mallnitz station, it is also possible to park the car at the large park-and-ride lot at the station and take the (free!) ski bus to the Ankogel cable car.

    Equipment

Usual ski touring equipment with shovel, probe, and avalanche transceiver.
Due to the short ascent, also ideal for freeride equipment (Duke or similar). Ascent without attachment and skins possible under good conditions.
