A very beautiful circular route in a very varied environment for fit hikers. It is also often undertaken as a conditioning training route. From the summit of the Schesaplana, you have a fantastic view. Along the way, there are always huts to stop for food or overnight stays (Oberzalimhütte, Mannheimer Hütte, Totalp Hütte, Douglashütte, Schattenlagenthütte).

    Author’s recommendation

For those who want to take it easy, an overnight stay in the Oberzalimhütte or Totalphütte is recommended. For those who prefer it very rustic, without showers, etc., an overnight stay in the Mannheimer Hütte is recommended.

Families who want to enjoy the route very leisurely, I recommend a first overnight stay at the Oberzalimhütte and a second overnight stay at the Totalphütte.

Anyone who wants to shorten the round for some reason at the end can take the cable car from Lünersee and then the bus back to the car. This saves 1000 m of descent.

    Safety information

The entire route is only recommended for experienced mountain hikers without fear of heights.

The Brandner Glacier has retreated so much that it should rather be called dead ice than a glacier. For this reason, it moves hardly at all and there are no crevasses, so it can be walked without a rope. Even when melted out, crampons are necessary for the glacier.

    Tips and suggestions

The Totalphütte was severely damaged by an avalanche in winter 2018/2019. The renovation costing millions is already underway, and the hut was already partially open in summer 2019. The hut should be fully repaired by June 2020.

    Roadbook

You start almost at the edge of Brand from the hiking parking lot on the right side. This parking lot is located about 200m before the Palüdbahn parking lot. Hiking signs are already at the parking lot, including the indication Schesaplana 6 3/4 hours. However, those who are good on foot only need 5.5 hours for this route. You follow the hiking trail partly on a forest road and partly on a nice hiking path. From the Unterzalimalpe, you then follow the forest road to the Oberzalimhütte. From here, follow the sign to the Leibersteig along a path. This is partly secured with wire ropes but is not a via ferrata. However, you should be sure-footed. In early summer until mid-July, large snowfields may still need to be crossed on the Leibersteig, which can be quite steep at 40° and exposed. At the end of the Leibersteig, you can leave the Mannheimer Hütte to the left and descend without a path southwards to the Ochsentaler Glacier, which you then cross southwards. This part of the glacier is rather flat and has no crevasses. From the Schafloch, you reach the Schafköpfe without a path but marked with cairns. Now always follow the rocky ridge towards east-southeast, partly marked with cairns but rather pathless, until the notch at point 2739. From here, follow the footprints northeast to the Schesaplana summit. The descent goes to the east on a path/footprints partly secured with steel cable and with short easy climbing passages to the Totalphütte. From here, there is again a proper hiking trail to the Lünersee and further via the "Böse Tritt" and the Schattenlaganthütte back to Brand.

    Public transport

By train from the direction of Feldkirch or Landeck to Bludenz. Here change to bus line 81 near Brand or Lünerseebahn and get off in Brand at the Palüdbahn stop.

    Directions

By car on the A14 coming from Feldkirch, take the Bürserberg / Brandnertal motorway exit. Coming from Landeck / Arlberg on the S16 also take the Bürserberg / Brandnertal exit. From Bürserberg continue to Brand and park at the free hiking parking lot on the right side of the road about 200m before the Palüdbahn at the edge of town.
