Author’s recommendation
- Because of the east orientation there is full sun on the slope very early, so despite the shortness of the route an early start is recommended
- The crossing to the Cabane des Dix can be attached to the ascent of the Pigne d'Arolla
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Track types
Safety information
Relatively safe route with little danger potential under normal conditions.
In poor visibility and without a track, the route through the block slope is not easy to find on the descent (too far right [in the descent direction] there are rockfalls, too far left icefalls.

Roadbook
From the Cabane des Vignettes (3152 m) initially north-facing on firn below the rock ridge on firn heading west to the Col des Vignettes, from here almost level in a southern direction along the east flank of the Pigne d'Arolla (with appropriate distance from the steep flank, from which ice blocks often break off above) to just west of P. 3159.
From here, keeping right (heading west) upwards to a steep, snow-covered block slope about 60 m ascent, until the glacier is reached again above.
Alternatively, one can also descend the block slope towards the Col de Charmotane and then ascend here from below almost without rock contact; in summer this variant is not really worthwhile due to the altitude loss.
Towards NW briefly along the upper edge of the rock face, then again heading west the snow slopes more or less straight up. The steepest section is about 35° and can be bare in late summer.
After reaching the upper, flatter glacier basin, heading WNW upwards directly into the saddle between the main summit and the south summit of the Pigne d'Arolla and from there along the south ridge to the summit. Time required approx. 2 - 2 1/4 hours.
Descent on the same route. Time for descent to the Cabane des Vignettes: approx. 1 1/4 hours.
