Roadbook
From the Braunschweiger Hut, follow the initially good path towards the Pitzaler Jöchl and after reaching a broad ridge, turn left. Via the "Jörg Auer Steig" it goes steeply down (partly with steel cables) into the cirque west of the Polleskogel, which you cross flatter to the north after arriving below. On the other side, it goes uphill again and you reach the long mountain ridge extending from the Wurmsitzkogel to the Polles Kogel. Over its magnificent block terrain, it continues trackless but well marked always northwards. Over the Wurmsitz Kogel (one descent on a steel ladder) and the Grapschkogel you reach the 3252 m high Wassertalkogel, where the Rheinland Pfalz bivouac is located.
Descending, continue along the ridge north to a notch where an emergency descent via the Wurmsitzkar into the Pitztal is possible. At another notch, turn slightly right. The path now leads somewhat east of the ridge toward the Sonnenkogel, which is bypassed on the east ridge (emergency descent to the Ötztal possible here). Ascending again to the northeast (partly steel cables), you reach the remains of the Puitkogelfern, which you cross northeastwards. On the other side, you climb a steep scree gully with the help of steel cables.
After further block terrain, another snowfield is crossed before a steep but well secured rocky step with footholds and steel cables must be mastered, behind which you cross over to the Weißmaurachjoch. From there, go left over a steep and rather unpleasant scree slope down into the Weißmaurachkar. Once flatter, heading west, leave the lake of the same name on the left and finally reach the Rüsselsheimer Hut via a last somewhat steeper descent.
