Roadbook
From the Braunschweiger Hütte, follow trail traces half-left towards the Linker Fernerkogel. At a fork, follow the sign "Gletscherbahn" to the right. Descend further, cross the glacier stream, and continue climbing over a boulder field (marked with poles). Where you can already see the glacier below you, continue straight a bit, then turn right and reach the Mittelberg Ferner. Continue along the glacier path marked with poles towards the Gletscherbahn. Soon, however, veer half-left and head southwest towards the Mittelberg Joch, which is already visible from afar. You remain well east of the ski lifts of the Pitzaler Gletscherbahn visible on the right. After crossing harmless crevasses, cross a short rocky section before ascending more steeply for a stretch on the glacier. Once the terrain flattens again, continue in the same direction and reach the distinctive Mittelberg Joch. Follow a steeper, glacier-free descent on trail traces down into the glacier basin of the Taschachferner.
By now, rope-up is required. Proceed along a long gentle ascent always heading southwest, bypassing the glacier break on the upper left in a wide left curve. This leads you directly towards the Hinterer Brochkogel, where you now turn right (southwest) to reach the clearly defined Brochkogeljoch almost on level ground.
Behind it, a steeper slope leads directly south down to the Kleiner Vernagtferner. Here, continue descending slightly towards the southwest, leaving a mighty rocky ridge to the right and reach the vast mountain basin of the Großer Vernagtferner, which unfortunately no longer fills it.
Soon, you reach ice-free terrain, cross the uppermost valley end of the Vernagtbach creek, and then continue southeast along the foot of the Hintergraslspitze to finally reach the Vernagthütte on a beautiful moraine ridge.
