Alpine Path no. 1, known as the "the classic," touches the imposing peaks of the Dolomites along a route of about 150 miles. There is an amazing variety of environments going from the Ampezzo Dolomites to the Belluno Dolomites. Sheer walls hundreds of feet high and beautiful lakes in the mountain ranges that made the history of mountaineering are the background to this Alpine trail, popular with hikers and Alpine nature lovers who also love to spend their evenings in the shelters, from where to enjoy the legendary aplenglow phenomenon. There are many variations and "recommended hikes" in addition to the basic trail, which do not present major mountaineering difficulties but require experience or the help of a guide.

    Directions

How to get to Lake Braies by train from Bolzano

There are no direct lines to Lake Braies from the train station of Bolzano, but there are solutions with transfers which are quite easy. Enjoy the journey by train and, for once, leave the car at home and admire the view.

Take the Eurocity train to Munich and get off at Fortezza/Franzensfeste station (39 minutes). Wait a few minutes for the regional train in the direction of S. Candido Innichen, which will take you to the station of Villabassa Braies/Niederdorf Prags (1 hour and 10 minutes).

Alternatively, instead of the Eurocity to Munich, you can board the regional train to Brenner, again get off at the Fortezza/Franzensfeste Station and continue to Villabassa-Braies Niederdorf-Prags (42 minutes).

Once you arrive at the destination station, the railway staff will be happy to provide you with all the necessary information to reach Lake Braies. There is an urban bus line to the lake, with a stop right at the station in Villabassa.

How to get to Lake Braies by train from Milan

If you live in Milan, the ideal solution is to set off from Central Station for Lake Braies. The trip is a little challenging because it includes several stops in different stations but the beauty of the place is certainly worth the time spent travelling.

From Milan station, you must first reach the Verona-Porta Nuova station; to do so, you have several solutions available, most of which travel on the high-speed line between Milan and Venice.

With the Frecciarossa Trenitalia towards Venice, you reach the Verona-Porta Nuova stop in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The same time is required to reach Verona-Porta Nuova station with high-speed Italo trains.

The alternative to arrive in Verona are the regional trains of the Milano Centrale - Verona-Porta Nuova line, which terminate in the Venetian city. The journey time in this case is 1 hour and 50 minutes. These trains also stop at Milan-Lambrate station.

From Verona you have two options. You can take a regional train or the faster Frecciargento towards Bolzano (1 hour and 30 minutes) or you can choose to continue with a regional train from Verona directly to the Fortezza/Franzensfeste station (2 hours and 24 minutes).

To sum up, to get to Lake Braies by train from Milan you can choose to make three stops (Verona, Bolzano, Fortezza/Franzensfeste) or only two (Verona, Fortezza/Franzenfeste) with journey times ranging from 6 to 7 hours.

In either case, from the station of Fortezza/Franzenfeste you will have to take the last train of your trip to arrive at the station of Villabassa Braies/Niederdorf Prags (42 minutes) from where the buses leave in the direction of Lake Braies.

How to get to Lake Braies by train from Trento

There are no direct train solutions to reach Lake Braies even from Trento, but the reduced journey times allow you to choose this destination even just for a day trip out in the countryside.

From Trento station you can reach Bolzano by regional train (47 minutes) or by the faster Frecciargento train (37 minutes). In both cases, Bolzano is the final train station on the route and you cannot go wrong.

From Bolzano station, you must then reach that of Fortezza/Franzensfeste with another regional line (42 minutes) and then continue to the final destination of Villabassa Braies/Niederdorf Prags (42 minutes) where you can take a bus to the lake.

From Trento station you can also directly reach the Fortezza/Franzensfeste station (1 hour and 20 minutes), where you have to wait for the connecting train to S. Candido Innichen that stops at Villabassa Braies/Niederdorf Prags station (42 minutes).

    Parking

If using your own car, it is important to consider traffic problems and queue times! To get to Lake Braies, starting from the pay-and-display car park in Ferrara, visitors have two options: 1. Excursion from the hamlet of Ferrara to Lake Braies (trail no. 1, lasting about 1 hour and 30 mins) 2. Continue with bus line 442i or the Monguelfo – Lake Braies shuttle service

PLEASE NOTE: the number of parking spaces in Braies is limited!
