02 Central Alpine Trail West, E09: Alpincenter Glocknerhaus - Oberwalderhütte
We leave the Glocknerhaus heading north, past a parking lot and slightly downhill to the Pasterzehaus. Behind the building, the path curves westward over alpine pastures up to an avalanche barrier and continues on the road leading to the parking lot at Franz-Josefs-Höhe.
At the parking garage, we turn to the promenade path which, after a short tunnel, runs along the Gamsgrube high above the Pasterze (great view of Großglockner!). Right at the end of the parking garage starts the Gamsgrubenweg, which first goes about 800 m through seven tunnels before finally emerging into the open. We follow the Gamsgrubenweg to its end at the waterfall corner. Then it continues over glacier-polished rock along a pole marking to the south Bockkarkees, which we cross a short distance to the foot of the Hoher Burgstall. Over scree and rubble and via short switchbacks, we ascend steeply to the widely visible Oberwalderhütte. (Summits: Eiskögele, 3,425 m, 4 ¼ hrs, Johannisberg, 3,453 m, 3 ½ hrs, Vorderer Bärenkopf, 3,249 m, 1 ½ hrs, Fuscherkarkopf, 3,331 m, 2 ¾ hrs.)
