An exemplary climbing area set up along a retaining wall on a disused railroad right-of-way. Ideal for beginners and climbing courses.

The area is very child-friendly. In front of the old train station building is a large, flat rest area that also offers shade. You can drive almost all the way up to the climbing wall.
The track provides directions for the approach when traveling by public transportation.
The climbing area is located along the “Alte Bahntrasse” bike path—please do not obstruct cyclists!

    Elevation: 1050m
    Orientation: South / Southeast.
Valley town: Obervellach in the Möll Valley, 687 m
    Information as of: July 2026

    Climbing
The wall has an incline of approximately 75° and offers rough handholds and footholds on the protruding granite boulders. Naturally, there are no cracks. Wall height: 8 to 15 m.
The belay stations at the tops are equipped with two bolts, a chain, and a fixed carabiner.
There are also a few fixed bolts at the base of the wall, so you can practice belaying at a fixed point. Currently, one or two slings are missing at the base of the wall (July 2026).
There is no information board. This isn’t necessary, as the area is very easy to navigate. Most routes are marked with their difficulty rating.

    Difficulty
There are many easy routes in the 3a to 3c difficulty range (corresponding to approximately UIAA III to IV-), few options in the IV to V range, and a few difficult lines on the arched overhangs.

    Rappelling
A steel cable railing has been installed above the right half of the wall to prevent falls. A staircase provides easy access to the top. The railing can be opened at three points for rappelling practice. There, a sheet of steel is attached to the edge of the wall to protect the climbing rope—perfect! The ropes can be secured to the trees on the slope.
Some pulleys can also be clipped in from above by traversing from the rappelling openings to the chains while secured by a rope.

    Author’s recommendation

On the “Alte Bahntrasse” bike path, you can ride comfortably from Kaponig to Mallnitz on a smooth gravel road with a gentle incline. Southwest and west-facing.
From Obervellach, the Großglockner Bike Path leads to Spittal an der Drau.

    Public transport

Take Postbus No. 100 from Spittal an der Drau or Winklern to Obervellach-Seilbahnplatz. Continue on foot following the track: Cross the stream and head north on a footpath to the single-lane access road. Follow this road as it winds uphill to the former train station grounds. 360 meters elevation gain / 1:00 hr.

    Directions

From Obervellach in the Möll Valley, it’s 3.5 km / 8 minutes by car.
In Obervellach, turn off toward Mallnitz / Ankogelbahn; after 1.1 km, take a sharp right toward Kaponig (sign for the climbing area). Follow the single-lane paved road for about 2.4 km up a winding road to a large, flat area (formerly the train station grounds). Ample parking is available here.
Take a few steps to the right to reach the climbing area by the retaining wall.
