Something unique of this scale is happening in the Eifel National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia: extensive forests and open landscapes are on their way back to wilderness!
The Eifel National Park, founded in 2004 and covering 110 square kilometers, is still considered a "development national park." Protected areas of this category have 30 years to leave at least three-quarters of their area to nature – only then do they meet the international criteria of a national park. But today, more than half of the area already follows the national park motto "Let nature be nature," meaning humans leave nature to its own inherent laws. This allows thousands of endangered animal and plant species to spread again within the special and newly emerging habitats. For example, rare animal species such as the black stork, eagle owl, and wildcat find their vital refuges in the Eifel National Park. Protecting nature along with these habitats and their inhabitants is the main task of the Eifel National Park.
Experience the exciting process of newly emerging wilderness up close! Observe wild animals, wander through natural beech mixed forests, and enjoy fascinating panoramic views of impressive lake landscapes or over the open grasslands of the Dreiborn Plateau. Explore the region on your own or be expertly guided by our rangers or forest guides. There is much to discover – and at any time of the year!
