Município de Aljustrel

Located in the heart of Baixo Alentejo, in southern Portugal, the municipality of Aljustrel covers an area of 458 Km2, with 8874 inhabitants, administratively divided into four parishes, namely, the Union of the Parishes of Aljustrel and Rio de Moinhos, Ervidel, S. João de Negrilhos, and Messejana. The municipality is crossed by the A2 and the EN2 roads.

Sector-wise, the municipality has an industrial weight above the national average. The mining company Almina is consolidated in mining exploration and the production and commercialization of copper and zinc concentrates, employing more than 1300 direct jobs and being the main driver of the local economy.

In the primary sector (agriculture and livestock), irrigated agriculture has been expanding significantly due to the growth in irrigated areas in recent years, through the Alqueva Multi-Purpose Enterprise, increasing from 5 thousand hectares in 2009 to about 30 thousand hectares currently. This new reality contributes to the diversification of production, the establishment of new investments, and the emergence of a new agriculture that creates wealth and employment.

From a heritage standpoint, it is important to mention the significant mining heritage present, both classical archaeology and industrial, with very relevant artifacts and facilities. Among all the tangible heritage in Aljustrel, the Piso 30 mining gallery and the Reception and Interpretation Center stand out, among others, integrated into the Aljustrel Mining Park, accessible to tourists and visitors.

Also noteworthy is the architectural interest of the town of Messejana and the village of Ervidel, which are important tourist points of interest. Ervidel is recognized for its wine production, represented by several wineries where the ancient clay pot wine is produced, as well as by the surroundings of the Roxo Reservoir.
