Alpenverein Obergailtal-Lesachtal Verified partner
Our section was first founded in 1894 under the name "Section Ober-Gailthal".
Already in 1896, the first hut was built by this section at Wolayer See, which was taken over in 1909 by the Section Austria in Vienna.
In 1923, our then financially weak section joined the wealthy Viennese as an independent local group in order to expedite the reconstruction of the alpine infrastructure destroyed in World War I.
After a turbulent history, just in time for the hundredth anniversary of the section's founding in 1994, following lengthy and extremely difficult negotiations under the then local group chairman Dir. Sepp Lederer, the OeAV Section Obergailtal-Lesachtal was re-established and has experienced a strong upswing since its approval in 1995. With around 2,500 members, it is now the largest non-urban section in Carinthia.
Many volunteers, supporters, and patrons as well as public authorities and the main association of the OeAV have helped to create modern recreational facilities in the OeAV leisure park, which are in demand today by our kids and youth as well as adults and holiday guests.
The greatest focus was placed and continues to be placed on improving the alpine trail network. In addition to approximately 330 km of alpine trails, the section also manages all the climbing routes in the region.
In 2006, we succeeded in acquiring the former Dr. Steinwender Hut, renamed Zollnersee Hut, from the Section Austria. It was subsequently renovated and rebuilt.
Promotion of all forms of alpinism is also not neglected here; we have qualified tour leaders and youth supervisors among us who offer a rich program for young and old.
Naturally, nature conservation also has its firm place in our club life.
So you can get started in the working area of our OeAV section in the municipal areas of Kötschach-Mauthen, Dellach im Gailtal, Kirchbach, and the Lesachtal. Get to know mountains, nature, and people of this wonderful region with us.
