The spring classic par excellence in the Karwendel, when the forest road is snow-free from around mid-April and can mostly be ridden by bike with ski touring equipment to the bridge below the Karwendelhaus. It is a strenuous and demanding day route with a very early start or a bit more relaxed with an overnight stay in the winter room of the Karwendelhaus.
A magnificent mountain scenery accompanies you to the Eppzirler Scharte.

The steep Höllkar, whose end is the Eppzirler Scharte as well as the Erlscharte, is located in the middle of the Karwendel Nature Park and is surrounded by a magnificent rock arena. The ascent to these two notches, which due to their southern exposure often already offer firn pleasure in February, is steep. The descent on the north side is steep and often still provides wonderful powder in late winter.
Soon you arrive at a meadow with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

On this ski route, we overcome around 1600 meters of elevation. A wonderful view from the summit and the descent over the wide white slopes quickly make you forget the effort of the ascent.

Popular classic Karwendel ski tour with a rustic stopoverFor die-hard fans of "real" Karwendel ski tours, the Pleisenspitze is a somewhat ambivalent venture. On the one hand, it is an excellent ski mountain with open, ideally inclined slopes, offering impressive views deep into the long Karwendel valleys from the summit. On the other hand, the solitude that characterizes many of the remote adventures in the center of the mountain range is hardly present here. Under good conditions during snowy winters, the forest clearings below the Pleisenhütte are usually ridden like mogul slopes, and even on the expansive summit slope, after a few days of good weather, there is hardly any fresh, untracked terrain left. A big plus is the rustic stopover opportunity at the aforementioned Pleisenhütte. Toni Gaugg, called "Pleisentoni," built this hut in the 1950s with an impressive effort – he had to carry all the building materials and tools up there. Today his son Sigi takes care of the many guests. During the ski touring season, the hut is managed on weekends, and you can soak up plenty of sunshine on the scenic terrace with Kaspressknödel and Radler or warm up in the small guest room in cold weather. For those for whom the 1600 meters of elevation gain is too much for a day tour, there is even the possibility to stay overnight and split the ascent into two stages.

Germany's "longest piste ski tour" Germany's best-known "freeride descent" is located in a wild rocky cirque of the Karwendel high above Mittenwald. While in midwinter, during good snow conditions, the guests of the Karwendelbahn ski this rock-fringed steep cirque to the mogul slope, in spring the ski tourers are on their own here again. Then the skis usually have to be carried on the lower 350 meters of altitude, which greatly reduces the attractiveness for true "freeriders" so much that they turn to other destinations. Although it is still not lonely in the Dammkar, as a tourer you no longer feel like a ghost driver on a one-way street. At the latest for the overhaul of the cable car (usually in May, sometimes already in April) nothing works without your own ascent effort. After the ascent through the wild rocky cirque, the ambiance at the end of the cirque appears somewhat surreal. First, you go through a 400 m long tunnel (unlit during the cable car revision - then be sure to take a headlamp) and reach the mountain station of the Karwendelbahn. Next to it is the Karwendel Nature Information Center in the form of an oversized telescope. What won't one do for one's tourists ... In any case, two peaks are now available. The Northern Linderspitze is climbed most frequently. The Western Karwendelspitze can also be ski toured up to just below the summit in good conditions. View, depth view, and the descent through the shady Dammkar are guaranteed from both summits.

So muß a gmiatliche Berghütt'n sei.

We got last place on parking and saw one person biking to the Gasthof Wiesenhof. Great idea! :-) It is not possible to park overnight at Gasthof Wiesenhof. Snow started about 500m from Gasthof (Die Raut). I recommend to stay overnight on Pleisenhutte. Great Hutte, great service!
