The Altenberg Mining Museum has been recognized as a "family-friendly experience" since 2021.
Guided tour through 550 years of mining activity
Mining in the area around Altenberg began in the first half of the 15th century. Around 1440, miners discovered an extensive tin ore deposit at the foot of the Geisingberg. The discovery of the "Altenberger Zwitterstock" marked the beginning of intensive mining activity. After the extraction of 37 million tons of tin ore, ore extraction and processing had to be discontinued in 1991 for reasons of profitability. Today, a number of mining witnesses and monuments bear witness to 550 years of traditional mining activity in the mining town of Altenberg (Erzgebirge).
