A short but rewarding ascent from the old town up to the landmark castle with wonderful views into the Altmühl valley.
From the center of Eichstätt the path leads up in a few minutes to the mighty Willibaldsburg, which towers high above the old town. The ascent is short but steep and immediately rewarded with impressive views back to the baroque streets and the surrounding Jura heights.
The castle, built in the 14th century, was later expanded into a representative residence of the Eichstätt prince-bishops. Today it houses two important museums: the Jura Museum with its famous fossil finds (including an original specimen of the primeval bird Archaeopteryx) and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History. Also worth seeing is the Willibaldsburg Garden, a bastion garden laid out according to a historical model with Mediterranean lush plants – a small place of tranquility above the town.
