Hundskogel via Lärchkar (SG I)
This quite demanding and largely unmarked circular route over the local mountain of the town Grundlsee offers probably the most comprehensive view of the "Sea of the Styrians."
If you look north from the town of Grundlsee, the plateau of the Totes Gebirge is dominated on the right side by a rocky peak called Hundsberg. To the left of Hundsberg stretches a green vegetation zone deep down into the rocks. This is the Lärchkar, which you can reach over a very steep ramp from the bottom left, somewhat exposed but without major climbing difficulties.
From the saddle above the Lärchkar, a trail runs along the terrain edge, passing in front of the Klammkogel to the west to the avalanche barriers above Grundlsee.
Through the avalanche barriers, you descend into the Lahnergrube and return via a forest road to the ascent route.
Author’s recommendation
An extension of this route to include the Trisselwand is easily possible.

Safety information
Surefootedness and a head for heights are required - a passage SG I and somewhat exposed.
You should be familiar with hiking in karst terrain based on inconspicuous trail markings.

Roadbook
From the parking lot in Grundlsee, walk past the volunteer fire brigade and the former inn Schramml up to the lake circuit path and follow the marked route towards "Appelhaus." At an elevation of 1040 m, a pull path branches off to the left, which you follow uphill through the forest, leaving the marked route. This pull path reaches a forest road, where you turn left, and at an elevation of 1170 m, an inconspicuous trail branches off to the right, which you follow uphill. The trail turns into a pull path that forks in the forest. Here you take the left branch uphill and soon find yourself on a footpath that climbs steeply through the forest along stone cairns, with some fallen wood lying across. The trail approaches the foot of the cliff, bypasses a first rock face on the left side, then becomes very steep and reaches the foot of the cliff entirely, turning left. At an elevation of 1400 m, the path then bends to the right and climbs very steeply in a straight line, approaching the vertical rock face below the Klammkogel more and more. A steep rock ramp finally leads diagonally up to the right, where it goes up in steps over partly slabby rocks (SG I) to the lower edge of the Lärchkar. At the top, a dwarf pine corridor leads to a crossing into the cirque, where the summit of Hundskogel can be seen directly for the first time. The path crosses the Lärchkar and leaves it at its upper end to the right, then turns left in a traverse and reaches a gully that runs diagonally uphill to the right. This gully widens at the top into a grassy cirque where the path disappears. You head for a saddle at the upper edge of the cirque and just before it turn right to climb over rocky grassy areas up to the summit of Hundskogel.
From the summit, return to the saddle at the end of the grassy cirque and follow a clear path to the right into the dwarf pines (stone cairns). Descend initially to the west and then in a clear arc up and down through dense dwarf pines and then through karst terrain westward, always along stone cairns. The route leads along the plateau edge through an old dwarf pine cutout and over open karst passages, past several vertical shafts and some rock gorges. Later it moves slightly away from the edge and crosses dense dwarf pines to a grassy gully that leads back to the edge. Then a wooden hut appears on the other side of a cirque, which you circle to the right to get near this hut, where you meet its clear access path west of it and follow it to the right. The here very obvious path leads through the dwarf pines in a largely straight line to the west. Past the first avalanche barriers, it reaches a T-junction where you keep left.
A wide trail leads to the cliff edge, through the avalanche barriers and then steeply downhill in switchbacks. At a high seat in the valley, you reach a T-junction, turn left, and take the continuation of the trail next to the high seat downhill to the right, with the following section affected by strong wind damage. Essentially, you descend through the forest in the fall line until you reach a forest road, follow it left and gently downhill to reconnect with the ascent route and follow it back to the starting point.
