Hinterer Bruderkogel over Dreibrüdersee with Widderkar (optional)
Along the approach past Gößler Alm you almost constantly have a fantastic view of the Dachstein behind you, which invites you to stop and admire again and again, as the Hallstatt glacier still shines majestically in the morning sun.
The deep green Dreibrüdersee lies hidden in a cirque between Dreibrüderkogel and Salzofen. Since it is not very deep, it even invites you to swim in summer.
Beyond that, the last path traces quickly disappear and in the open karst terrain you rely on rare cairns, a GPS track, and your own sense of direction. However, the easiest line to the summit of Hinterer Bruderkogel has no technical difficulties.
A subsequent descent into Widderkar is only suitable for truly hardened karst enthusiasts, as it leads pathlessly steeply downhill over a block field. In return, you are rewarded on the way back to Zimitzalm with idyllic mountain solitude.

The ascent route is pathless and unmarked in the upper part, so a GPS device with track is highly recommended.
When crossing karst zones, great caution is always required due to many crevices and shafts.

Roadbook
From the parking lot in Schachen, follow the hiking trail towards Pühringer Hut until the junction towards Zmitzalm, where there is a wooden signpost with the inscription "Salzofen/Gößler Alm" (trail no. 213) to the left uphill (marked). At the next fork, do not go left (Zmitzalm), but continue straight towards Gößler Alm, which is reached after a long, steep ascent. There, follow a signpost "Salzofen" to the left and soon uphill again. Passing Aibel on the right, go over a flat saddle with a hunting hut, then descend into a cirque at the foot of Salzofen, where just before the lowest point you will find a rock with red inscription "3 Br.See" with an arrow to the left, which you follow. An unmarked but clear path leads down to Dreibrüdersee and continues past its left side.
Behind the lake, follow the trail which soon leads uphill again, going straight for a while until it becomes increasingly steep and bends left into an alder-covered slope. The path traces soon disperse, and you climb without a path to a rock-strewn mountain meadow saddle, where you find cairns and a larch passage, behind which you turn right into a larch corridor. At the lower end of the larches, go diagonally right down into the bottom of a small karst valley, where you meet cairns leading inward into the valley. On stony meadow ground you ascend gently and later bend slightly right. However, stay in the valley and do not follow a misleading cairn further right; rather go again left directly towards the summit of Hinterer Bruderkogel and climb over rough karst cliffs following the valley upwards until you reach a cirque below the summit, which is karstic on the right side, but shows a meadow strip on the left, which you follow uphill. The summit ascent itself leads over a very steep meadow with two rocky narrow passages near the top before it levels off again and reaches the highest point (without summit cross).
For the descent from the summit, follow the ascent route back to the point where you came from the east over Dreibrüdersee; you can return there again — or continue straight downhill, passing a karst hollow on its right edge and then follow a shallow gully slightly uphill to its highest left end by the larches. There, watch for cairns leading to a ramp going diagonally left downhill and downhill. This ramp ends in a gully that leads steeply down over loose scree into a scree field that you must painfully and steeply descend all the way down to reach a meadow in the valley floor. In this flat meadow, you will find a clearly visible trail that leads right into the valley but still downhill to a hunting hut, where you turn left and take a well-marked path downhill. After a long descent on the beautiful hunting trail through Widderkar, you finally reach a forest road that you soon leave again to descend to Zmitzalm on a path through the forest.
From Zmitzalm, follow the stream downhill to the lake circular trail and then left over a bridge back to the starting point.
