3.5 kilometres southwest of the city centre, the Basilica Santuario della Madonna di San Luca sits enthroned on a hill. From its height, it occupies a powerful and appropriately celestial position high above the hustle and bustle of the rural city.
In the church hangs an image of the Madonna, supposedly the work of St. Luke, brought to Bologna from the Near East in the 12th century. The 18th century sanctuary is connected to the city wall by an arcade. With its 666 steps, it is considered the longest arcade in the world, starting at Piazza di Porta Saragozza.
