10 Holderbach - fritillaries and thrush swarms
Biologische Station StädteRegion Aachen e.V.
On this hike, you can see the blue shimmering fritillary in May and June. You walk along extensively managed meadows and pass through areas where the conversion from spruce forest to mixed deciduous forest has been initiated.
The hiking route runs mostly along meadows and pastures, one section passes through forest. You walk past species-rich cow parsley meadows that are extensively managed and where, besides cow parsley, numerous other typical plants grow such as St John's wort, black knapweed, tormentil and Himalayan knotweed. Here and on wet grassland you can see numerous butterflies, e.g., various species of fritillaries and the blue shimmering fritillary. In the forest, you pass areas that used to be spruce stands, where various deciduous tree species have been planted, thus initiating the conversion to species-rich mixed deciduous forest.

Roadbook
Follow the service road at the car park to the intersection. Here go straight ahead to the next T-junction and turn right there. After about 170 m, take the path leading left. It ends on an asphalted service road, where we turn left.
Follow this path to the valley floor. Here turn left behind the fishing ponds onto a narrow path (hiking trail 47). It first runs along the stream, then shortly after up the slope.
After the path has become a hollow way, keep right and come up to a wide forest track. Turn right here and at the next T-junction turn left uphill.
At the intersection at the wind turbine, turn right and follow the path first downhill, then behind the slight curve uphill. About 180 m after the curve, turn right. Stay on the path and at a fork turn right to continue along the valley (hiking trail 61).
Where hiking trail 61 turns left, go straight ahead until you meet the path used at the start of the hike. Follow this to the left. From here continue about 800 m straight ahead until a field path leads right back to the car park shortly before the main road to Rohren.
