Az ősrégészeti leleteiről híres, fokozottan védett Balla-barlang Répáshuta határában található.

Hillebrand Jenő kezdte meg a 20. század elején a barlang feltárását, és rögtön egy szenzációs leletet talált 1909-ben az őslénytani maradványok és az őskőkori ember törpe pengéi mellett: egy jégkorszak végi, kb. másfél éves gyermek koponyáját.

A késő-pleisztocénben, mintegy 130 000 éve jelent meg az ember a Bükk hegységben, legnevesebb lelőhelyei a Szeleta-barlang, az Istállós-kői-barlang, a Suba-lyuk és a Balla-barlang. Ez utóbbi üreg nevezetessége, hogy innen került elő az első, őskőkorinak leírt embermaradvány. A csontváz különlegessége, a felszínhez közeli helyzete ellenére tapasztalható archaikus jelleg: a rendkívül hosszú formájú és vastag falú koponya, az előreugró állcsont, a gyengén fejlett állcsúcs és az állkapocs belső oldalán alig tapintható tövisnyúlvány mind az ősi formák jellegzetességei.

A további régészeti feltárások során barlangi medve, barlangi hiéna, ősbölény csontjai és a korai Szeleta-kultúra jellegzetes kőeszközei kerültek elő.

A barlang 1951 óta régészeti védelem alatt áll, 1982 óta fokozottan védett. A triász időszaki mészkőben kialakult, inaktív forrásbarlang 128 méter hosszú, melyben szabadon, minden felszerelés nélkül körbejárható az 54 méter hosszú, átlagosan 6 méter magas és 8-10 méter széles csarnok.

A barlangot Balla-bérc lejtőjén, 566 méteres magasságban találjuk, hatalmas nyílása már messziről jól látható. Répáshutáról a temető előtt induló Kőbalta-tanösvény mentén fedezhetjük fel. A barlang szabadon látogatható, előtte tájékoztató táblán olvashatunk történetéről, jelentőségéről.

  • A buszmegállóból, illetve a Községházától a S jelzésen a Szabadság utcán induljunk el. A temető után nem sokkal jobbra folytatódik az út, a végén a SΩ jelzés vezet a barlanghoz (500 m).
