THE JUMINKEKO - THE NEST OF THE KALEVALA
The Juminkeko Foundation is located in the Juminkeko building, a prime example of modern Finnish wood architecture that has been designed by the internationally acclaimed Finnish architects Mikko Heikkinen and Markku Komonen
Construction of the building was completed in 1999 as part of the 150 Anniversary of the New Kalevala. The Ministry of Education was the principal contractor. The Juminkeko building is unique in that it recycles the structures of an old woodhouse in a modern culture center.
Juminkeko is also surrounded by 24 wooden pillars, which support a roof covered with lingonberry and heather. The exterior of the building has been treated with a mixture of tar and linseed oil. The auditorium's log structures have been hewed by hand. The stairs in the main entrance as well as the floor in the lobby and patio have been built from post trees.
