The route of the RurUfer cycle path is as varied as the watercourse itself: Sometimes it flows gently, sometimes it leaves roaring heights behind. The cycle route leads through the former cloth-making town of Monschau to Einruhr through the picturesque Rur valley. Finally, the route leads along the Rur Lake through the Rureifel, past Düren with its paper mills, Jülich with the bridgehead park and the citadel, and finally through the Heinsberg region to Roermond. Along the edge of the RurUfer cycle path, the history of water comes alive: cloth production, dams, paper production – interesting museums are waiting to bring the water experience closer to cyclists. The unique High Fens in Europe and the still young Eifel National Park offer pure nature experience.

Those who want to experience the RurUfer cycle path as a multi-day tour can do so in a total of 3 stages.

    • Stage 1 - Signal de Brotagne - Heimbach
    • Stage 2 - From Heimbach to Jülich
    • Stage 3 - From Jülich to Roermond

The stations along the route allow individual route and stage planning and also enable some single stages to be experienced as day trips.

    • Rur Lake with dam

    Author’s recommendation

Around the Rur Lake - on water and land
Whether sailing, surfing, boat tour or swimming: The Rur reservoir offers water sports and leisure activities in colorful variety. Nature lovers will also enjoy the charming lake landscape, who just want to relax and enjoy. Those who want to take a closer look at the Rur Lake should choose a tour with the Rur Lake fleet. Those who prefer to be active themselves should better enjoy a bike trip around the lake. One of the highlights in summer is the big fireworks "Rursee in Flames".

    Roadbook

More than half of the total route is flat. Hilly sections with partly steep ascents occur only in the upper course of the Rur. The surface on secondary roads, farm roads, and riverside paths is mostly unpaved, with only a few asphalted paths. The RurUfer cycle path mostly runs off the roads with exceptions in the upper Rur valley; Düren-Roermond.

    Route guidance

The route is completely signposted with the logo of the RurUfer cycle path. Simply follow the directional signs.

    Public transport

    Travel options to Kalterherberg

Reaching the actual starting point at Signal de Brotagne by public transport is relatively difficult. A trip using public transport including bike transport makes sense especially on Sundays and public holidays. Then it is recommended to travel from Aachen with the bike bus, which transports bicycles in summer months over Roetgen to Kalterherberg station (direct connection) in an extra trailer to the national park region. More information can be found at: www.avv.de/rad

Alternatively, you can also be brought from Aachen main station to the starting point of the RurUfer cycle path by an experienced shuttle service. (More info about the shuttle service is available from Rureifel Tourismus e.V, An der Laag 4, 52396 Heimbach Tel.: +49 24 46 / 80 579-0, Email: info@rureifel-tourismus.de, Homepage: www.rureifel-tourismus.de)

To get back to the starting point after your trip, take the train via Mönchengladbach back to Aachen. From there, follow the connection described above to Kalterherberg.

    Directions

If you arrive by car, two different options are recommended:

    Option A:

You park your car in Aachen, travel from there to the Eifel by regional buses and return after finishing your trip by train via Mönchengladbach to Aachen.

    Option B:

At the start of your trip, leave your car at Dalheim-Röttgen station. Then take the train via Mönchengladbach to Aachen and from there continue with regional buses to Kalterherberg. This way you have your car available at the end of the trip.

    Parking

    Option A:

703 paid parking spaces are available at the main station parking garage (Lagerhausstraße 20).
Information about prices and occupancy can be found at http://www.apag.de/parkobjekte/parkhaus-hauptbahnhof

    Option B:

Park your car at Dahlhein-Röttgen station, which is located on Sankt-Ludwig-Straße.
