Errichtet in den Jahren 1933/34 durch den Wasserverband Stausee Obermaubach, dient er gemeinsam mit dem Staubecken Heimbach dem Wochenausgleich des Spitzenstrom-Wasserbedarfs der Wasserkraftwerke Heimbach und Schwammenauel. Seit 1968 liefert ein Kraftwerk zu Füßen des Damms mit einer Leistung von 600 kW Strom an das RWE-Netz.
