Narrow paths over the typical open landscape of the Hotzenwald with its mountain meadows and views up to the Alps and the Hohwehraschlucht give the 5th stage its charm.

From the spa climate Kneipp health resort St. Blasien in the deep valley of the Alb, the wooden observation tower at the 1,039 meter high Lehenkopf must first be reached. Soft forest paths lead from the tower over to the first pastures of Urberg and Dachsberg. Individual farms stand on the way over Rüttewies and Horbach to the idyllic monastery pond. A short ascent leads the way up to the plateau and over to Ibach, which lies dreamily in the wide landscape. 427 people live in this high valley formed by the Feldberg glacier during the Ice Age, and you would like to do the same. The most beautiful view over the town and the Hotzenwald stretching to the south and to the Alps is offered from the hilltop decorated with a cross above Ibach. The landscape changes again. The Schluchtensteig zigzags steeply into the Hohwehraschlucht. The small, romantic forest gorge leaves hardly any room for the path and the Wehra. Here it hops over small cascades and steps towards Todtmoos, which nestles into the valley under the protection of its baroque pilgrimage church.

    Author’s recommendation

Shortly behind the monastery pond the path branches off to the nature experience site of the former Friedrich-August pit mining. The tunnel is accessible all year round.

    Safety information

For hiking the Schluchtensteig you should definitely use ankle-high hiking boots with profiled soles and possibly poles for the sometimes very steep and slippery sections in the gorge. Please note that especially in protected forests and nature reserves, dangers from deadwood and rockfall in the gorges may exist.
The Wutachflühen, the Wutach and Haslach gorges are divided into different rescue sectors. These enable the mountain rescue service to take targeted measures in case of emergency. Therefore, please pay attention to which sector you are in.

The fifth Schluchtensteig stage leads from St. Blasien to Todtmoos. The start is at the northwest gate of the monastery complex in St. Blasien. You pass through this, past the House of Guests and the Tourist Information to the intersection. Here you follow the signpost towards Todtmoos. The path goes past the buildings of the monastery boarding school and later past an old mill. Soon the path runs right under a underpass. Another signpost here points towards Holzberg and quickly leads into the forest. Following the path, you soon have a beautiful view over St. Blasien. The path ends at a wider trail. At the signpost, the Schluchtensteig runs both on paths and wider trails uphill to the Lehenkopf tower. This wooden observation tower is located at 1039m altitude. From here, the path goes down a bit again on a forest road to the Lehenhütte. Exiting the forest, there is an intersection. Here you take the path that goes right across the country road. To the left, the Schluchtensteig then turns into a meadow path. Through the pasture landscape it then goes into the forest and soon onto a path. Meadows and forest alternate until another viewpoint is reached. There are also benches here inviting you to rest.

From here, the path goes down again onto the paved road. This leads over a parking lot to the picturesque monastery pond. There is also a restaurant there, past which the path leads up into the forest. Soon you reach a pit where nickel was once mined. From here it goes to the next viewpoint, the Kreuzfelsen. Here too you can enjoy the beautiful view. Exiting the forest, the path then runs through the open landscape. Soon it goes back towards the forest. Along the edge of the forest you follow the path to a rest bench, where you can enjoy the magnificent view over the community of Ibach.

The path then leads back into the forest and you reach a road via a forest road. On this, you go left and then right past a parking lot. Here follows a panorama path that leads up to the Lampenschweine viewpoint. From here it continues along pastures along the edge of the forest and past a shelter. Following this path you reach the summit cross on the Schluchtensteig. A great view over the wide landscape can be admired. A wide path leads to a signpost, which you follow to the right. Over a meadow path you walk down into the valley. For a short stretch, the path runs along the district road until it goes back into the forest on a wide forest road going uphill. At the intersection you go left to the country road. Arriving here on Hörnleberg stands the Ibacher Kreuz.

From here, you go back into the forest on a narrow, rustic path downhill into the Wehratal. The Schluchtensteig zigzags steeply down into the Hohwehraschlucht. What sounds so dramatic turns out to be a romantic small forest gorge that barely leaves room for the path and the Wehra. This here, barely emerged, already hops cheerfully over small cascades and steps towards Todtmoos, which nestles into the valley under the protection of its baroque pilgrimage church. Accompanied by the Wehra you reach Todtmoos. Over the road, it goes into the beautiful stage town and another hiking day comes to an end.

    Equipment

Along the Schluchtensteig there are usually plenty of opportunities to rest. From stage to stage, however, there are different numbers of rest areas and shelters. Individual benches can be found again and again - apart from the gorge sections. A seat pad (cushion) is recommended as many stones and benches are often damp.
Refreshment opportunities are partially only found in the stage towns. On the first, second, and sixth stages, you will find refreshment opportunities a few kilometres after the start and then only again at the end. Therefore, you should always have some fruit, energy bars, and enough to drink with you. However, there are certainly some culinary temptations, such as a Black Forest cake or a hearty regional snack between stages that you should not miss.
