EXPERIENCE WORLD HERITAGE!
A hike to the Wasserklotz promises a great view into the forested Reichraminger Hintergebirge, to the Haller Mauern, and to the peaks of the Gesäuse mountains.
The Kalkalpen National Park is the largest beech forest conservation area in the Alps and was designated Austria's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2017. On the hike from Almrast Zickerreith via the Dörflmoaralm to the Wasserklotz, you gain insight into the valuable ecosystem of near-natural beech forests with their plants and animals. Up to the Dörflmoaralm, the path runs on a forest road and then turns right over the alpine pasture to the Ahornsattel. From here, a steep ascent to the summit. Just below the summit, a short, exposed section must be overcome.

The route starts at the Almrast Zickerreith at Hengstpass. Right next to the alpine building, you walk on path no. 40 forest road via Kreuzau to the Dörflmoaralm (not managed). Once arrived here, keep right and follow path no. 475 to the Ahornsattel. On the right, next to a channel, a steeply ascending trail now leads to the summit of the Wasserklotz. Just below the summit cross, a short exposed section must be overcome (sure-footedness required). The Wasserklotz is a viewing platform overlooking the Haller Mauern nature reserve, Sengsengebirge, the Reichraminger Hintergebirge, and views to the mountain peaks in the Gesäuse National Park.
The descent takes place either the same way back or can be extended into a small circular route variant by briefly continuing along the ridge further west towards Astein and then following the trail downwards to the Ahornsattel. Here you can continue along an old cart track that turns into a trail in the woodland. This then meets the forest road above the Kreuzau again (unmarked).
Upon arriving back at the starting point, you can stop at the Almrast Zickerreith or at the neighboring Spitzenbergeralm and end the hiking day with various alpine delicacies.
