Grundlsee circuit with Toplitzsee
Along the GEOTRAIL at the Grundlsee, you learn details about creeping block slopes, the formation of a kettle landscape, the glacial activity of the ice age, and the common foundation of the Hallstatt culture and RIGIPS Austria. At the Toplitzsee, you will find hidden glacial potholes and seven karst springs that seemingly flow in the "wrong" direction.
The impressive fjord landscape, where today the Grundlsee and Toplitzsee lie, is characterized by steep rock walls which acquired their shape during the last ice age. The Backenstein and the Reichenstein dominate the north shore of the Grundlsee, and the shores of the Toplitzsee are so steep that it cannot be circled on foot.
After the damage caused by the Kyrill hurricane has now been completely repaired, all sections of the circular hiking route described here are in excellent condition and can easily be walked even in rain or bad weather.
Author’s recommendation
From May to October, you can also take the Grundlsee ferry for the return journey from Gößl to the Seehof.
After a rainy round around the lake, a visit to the nearby Narzissen spa is particularly relaxing.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at the Seehotel, walk along the lake shore about 150 m west and then cross a bridge to the left, crossing the outlet of the Grundlsee. From here, follow the green signpost "Wanderweg um den See" (hiking trail around the lake) or the "Footpath to Gößl", which is marked as the "GEOTRAIL" with interesting explanations.
Behind the last houses on the west shore, the path first leads through the forest and then on a forest road over an alluvial fan slightly above the lake through the hamlet "Mitterau", before it reaches the steepest section of the south shore, where you walk on a narrow path high above the water.
At the district of Wienern, the path before Gößl again reaches a forest road and leads to the east shore, where just before the Stimitzbach you turn right and follow the signpost to the "Ranftlmühle". Behind the old mill, which is located on a small dam of the Stimitzbach, follow the signs towards the "Toplitzsee" to station 29 on the GEOTRAIL, where you can admire several glacial potholes from the ice age in the middle of the forest. After this, the shore of the Toplitzsee is soon reached. A short detour to the karst springs of "Siebenbrunnen" leads to the right before heading to the guesthouse "Fischermühle".
For the return journey to Gößl, first take the forest road and after about 200 m turn left to follow a path along the Toplitzbach to the shore of the Grundlsee, which you reach at the guesthouse "Rostiger Anker".
On the east shore of the Grundlsee, walk on a footpath directly along the lake, past the boat dock and further on a sidewalk beside the road to a signpost for the rowing club (left). Here, follow the road another 50 meters along a right curve and then leave it to the right at the green signpost "Grundlsee" or "Schachnermühle" to follow a path into the forest. The beautiful path leads past the junction towards Lahngangseen and Zimitzalm to the district "Gaiswinkl", where you do not take the "Gaiswinkler Rundweg", but continue straight west, where you encounter signposts again towards "Grundlsee" and follow them. Past old farmhouses in Rößlern, you finally reach the town of Grundlsee with its picturesque church and from here follow the signposts towards "Bad Aussee" until you almost reach the height of the west shore, where a short path down to the left leads back to the Seehof and thus to the starting point.
Note: Basically, you can start the Grundlsee circuit at any point of the path and also easily complete it in the opposite direction.
