    This route impresses with a very special view!

    However, its unmarked section is somewhat pathless and a bit strenuous.

    The special feature of the view at Kreuzkogel and Kreuzkarschneid is their striking contrast: here the gentle and rounded shapes of the Niedere Tauern, there the rugged contours of the Gesäuse mountains; here mainly green-red-brown, which transitions to dark primary rock gray towards the peaks, there the bright colors of limestone, whose scree cirques appear snow white from afar. This charming contrast is almost constantly visible on the path from Kreuzkogel to Kreuzkarschneid.

    The ascent to the Wirtstörl is marked and corresponds to the route to Geierkogel. However, the last section under the Törl is very steep and rather uncomfortable.

    For the unmarked crossing to Kreuzkarschneid, you have to descend behind the summit of Kreuzkogel over a scree field to find a dwarf pine corridor. It was cut many years ago for wildlife and is only passable with difficulty.

    The also unmarked descent from Kreuzkarschneid back to the valley is quite comfortable again. First, you follow a beautiful meadow path, then follow forest road sections and dragging paths.

    Author’s recommendation

    The Triebental offers numerous other opportunities for hiking and mountaineering. It is therefore worth spending several days there.

    Safety information

    This route does not present particular safety risks in itself, but it is unmarked and partly pathless from the Wirtstörl onwards.

    Special caution is advised when descending through a scree field below the Kreuzkogel.

    Tips and suggestions

    Geierkogel and Sonntagskogel from the Triebental;

    Gasthof Braun

    Roadbook

    At Gasthof Braun, follow the yellow signs labeled "to Hohentauern," which lead to the marked path towards Braunkar. Soon, turn left off the forest road onto the old alpine path, which ascends steadily and later crosses the forest road. Just before the Kälberhütte, the alpine path merges back into the forest road and follows it for a short distance. At the next fork, it is important not to continue right and downhill "to Hohentauern," but to follow the driving path uphill to the left, where you will find a signpost "Geierkogel" at the next curve. The driving path passes the Kälberhütte and is left again at the upper edge of the clearing to the left (uphill) (signpost). Shortly after a heavily eroded stream crossing, you reach a fork. The so-called "old path" leads left through the cirque, the "new" one goes straight and is somewhat shorter but quite swampy. Both trails meet again at the upper end of the Braunkar, where the steep meadow ascent to the Wirtstörl begins, interrupted in the middle by a crossing through dense alder bushes.

    At the Wirtstörl, turn right and ascend northward on path traces along the broad ridge to the summit of the Kreuzkogel.

    From the summit, continue along the ridge north to a subpeak and descend further to a meadow saddle, then right along the dwarf pines at the escarpment until a small dwarf pine corridor leads left back to the other side of the ridge. Navigate through tall dwarf pines below the crest to a scree slope that leads right to a distinctive stone pyramid directly on the ridge.

    Now you need to find a wide-cut dwarf pine corridor that starts much lower down. For this, turn west from the stone pyramid and descend quite laboriously about 100 vertical meters over the block scree towards the village of Hohentauern until a well over five-meter-wide corridor opens to the right in the dwarf pines. It is passable with some effort at the upper edge. It first leads horizontally into the dwarf pines and then slightly uphill to a fork, where you follow the left, lower branch. (The upper branch of the corridor is a small detour but also leads towards Kreuzkarschneid.) Soon you reach the ridge again, where the corridor transitions into a path that descends through the dwarf pines and eventually turns right. Here you must not continue onto the east side of the mountain ridge but descend further left along the ridge, where you will soon meet a clearly defined path that leads through partly dense dwarf pines down to a saddle with a small Tauern water body below Kreuzkarschneid.

    At this saddle, a meadow path begins, initially turning to the lower left and later descending in switchbacks. At a fork, stay left and follow the path to a spring and a slightly lower dragging path that soon leads to a forest road. You can shorten a subsequent left turn and finally reach the wide Hasensattel on the forest road with a hunting lodge above it. Here, turn right and descend in a straight line across the large pasture. In the lowest area of the pasture, switch to the forest to the right and follow an old tractor track to a driving path, which continues gently downhill. After a left curve, a dragging path branches off to the right downhill, which you follow until it soon merges back into the driving path. At the next left curve, branch again right onto a dragging path and descend in a straight line all the way down, where you then turn right on a driving path. Behind a bridge, you reach the large pasture above Gasthof Braun and return to the starting point.
