Geierkogel and Sonntagskogel from Triebental
From the valley, you ascend on an old cart track to the Kälberhütte, located at the lower end of Braunkar. You cross the broad cirque floor to reach the steep cirque wall, where you find Wirtstörl, from which a narrow ridge leads up to the summit ridge. Above a deep notch (the start of the Geierkogel northeast chute), the summit cross of Geierkogel stands directly at the steep drop overlooking Braunkar.
The ridge between Geierkogel and Sonntagskogel and further almost to Triebenertörl is also shaped by this eastern drop. To the west, the terrain is relatively gentle, so no ridge is formed. Nevertheless, the ridge and the route are steep in sections here.
The descent from Triebenertörl proceeds down the cirque wall into the cirque of Triebener Hut and further down a historic alpine path along the Bärenbach.
You reach Triebental about 1.9 km further into the valley from the starting point, from which you walk back comfortably along the driveway.

At Gasthof Braun, follow the yellow signs labeled "to Hohentauern," which lead to the marked path towards Braunkar. Soon, turn left off the forest road onto the old alpine path, which steadily ascends and later crosses the forest road. Just before the Kälberhütte, the alpine path rejoins the forest road and follows it for a short distance. At the next intersection, it is important not to go right and downhill "to Hohentauern," but to follow the driveway uphill to the left, where you will find signs to Geierkogel and Sonntagskogel at the next curve. The old route directly across the meadow below the Kälberhütte is hardly recognizable anymore, so it is easier to follow the driveway here.
The driveway passes the Kälberhütte and is left at the upper edge of the clearing at the signs to the left (uphill). Shortly after a heavily eroded stream crossing, you reach a fork in the path. The so-called "old path" leads left through the cirque, the "new" straight ahead and is somewhat shorter. Both paths are marked and meet again at the upper end of Braunkar, where the steep meadow ascent to Wirtstörl begins, interrupted in the middle by a crossing through dense alder bushes.
At Wirtstörl, turn left and follow the marking, which climbs very steeply southward to the main ridge of Geierkogel, where you meet the marked trail coming up from Hohentauern (signs are missing here).
The summit cross is already in sight, but you must first descend to the notch above the northeast chute before reaching the cross via a short, steep summit slope.
From the summit of Geierkogel, a path leads steeply down to Weingrubentörl. Before this, you have the option to branch off without a path to the left over a ridge to Triebenkogel, from where you can either return to Braunkar or descend directly off-trail to the Triebener Hut.
The ascent from Weingrubentörl to Sonntagskogel is very steep and follows very tight switchbacks. Anyone who can still climb this enjoyably can truly be satisfied with their fitness!
The descent from Sonntagskogel to Triebenertörl is also very steep in its upper part. It also features a heavily eroded section where especially descending requires caution. The lower part becomes gentler until the small summit of Triebenertörl is reached.
At Triebenertörl, turn left (east) and descend into the cirque towards the Triebener Hut. The lower part of this path above the alpine pasture is heavily impacted by grazing cattle and is somewhat arduous for hikers. Beyond a swampy pasture, you reach a forest road, which you follow downhill until the marking turns off again onto the old alpine path.
In the valley floor of Triebental, you reach an extensive meadow. The path runs along its southern edge and partially through the forest along the Bärenbach until shortly before the Triebenbach or the driveway, where you reach a pasture. The path is a bit unclear here because the sign at the bottom states the pasture should be crossed diagonally. However, you can also walk along its edge up to the driveway and climb over the fence.
Finally, follow the driveway downhill back to Gasthof Braun, where you can enjoy a snack on the sun terrace, once again directly viewing the distant summit cross of Geierkogel.
