An extremely versatile mountain experience with considerable mountaineering demands. Ice and rock, easy climbing, and a lot of loose scree require high alpine experience. But then nothing stands in the way of the impressive crossing to the Glorer Hut. The landscape impresses with changing vegetation zones and a dreamlike panorama.

The descent from the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte over the Hohewartscharte to the Salmhütte is not only scenic and mountaineering-wise interesting but also historically significant, as it follows the route of the first climbers on the Großglockner. After easy ridge climbing and a short glacier crossing at the very beginning, the 150 m high rock ledge after the notch is overcome with the help of pegs and steps. However, despite rope protections, the descent can be tricky depending on conditions. There is also a rockfall hazard. Accompanied by the magnificent view of the surrounding 3000 m peaks, it then becomes significantly easier downhill to the Salmhütte, which invites you to stop for a break. A final protected path awaits before continuing over flat alpine meadows to reach the Glorer Hut.
Author’s recommendation
A stop at the beautifully located Salmhütte with a direct view of the Großglockner should not be missed!
Absolute surefootedness and a head for heights are required. There is a risk of rockfall in the area of the Hohewartscharte. Additional rope securing may be advisable.
Short glacier crossing before the Hohewartscharte. In early summer, old snowfields must also be expected. Caution with icing on the descent from the Hohewartscharte and on the ascent from the Leiter Valley!
Tips and suggestions
All information about the route is also available on the Osttirol 360° Skyline Trail website:
From the Erzherzog-Johann Hut (3454 m) at Adlersruhe, along an easy climb on the ridge, then down over the remains of the Hofmann glacier to the Hohewartscharte (3182 m). The following approx. 150 m high rock ledge is secured with pegs and wire ropes. Continue downhill over scree and debris or snowfields at the edge of the already largely retreated Hohewart glacier. Now crossing below the Schwerteck southward to descend to the Salmhütte (2644 m). The path leads in a large arc from the hut flat into the head of the Leiter Valley. Cross the Leiterbach (approx. 2590 m) and negotiate the short, steep ascent below Glatzberg via a secured path. At the following junction, keep right. From the left comes an easier hiking path descending from the Salmhütte. This can also be chosen as an alternative descent to avoid the secured path. Continue over flat alpine meadows towards the south until shortly before the Glorer Hut where you meet the hut access from the Leiter Valley. Keep right here and ascend slightly to the Glorer Hut (2642 m) at the Berger Törl.
