Nordwaldkammweg Tour 7 Nebelstein - Nove Hrady
The Nordwaldkammweg is a technically easy hiking path on the northern ridge of the Mühlviertel, encompassing marked paths in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and providing about 14 days of hiking enjoyment.
The seventh day’s route leads downhill from the Nebelstein to Harbach and then uphill again to the Mandelstein, then along the Czech-Austrian border to Pyhrabruck in Lower Austria. From there, it is not far to the Czech town of Nove Hrady / Gratzen.
The Nordwaldkammweg is Austria’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. With its typical blue-white ridge marking in Austria, it is the successor and part of the Böhmerwaldbund ridge path from 1912, which originally started in Rosenberg an der Moldau and ran along the Czech border over the Ore and Giant Mountains to Poland.
In 2012, the classic Nordwaldkammweg was extended by a return path called Nordwaldkammweg II, from Dreisesselberg in Bavaria to the Nebelstein in the Waldviertel, which uses the Green Belt of Europe after the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The classic Nordwaldkammweg ended at the Nebelstein after 144 km. It was then extended by the Waldviertel section to the Mandelstein viewpoint (874 m) before, in 2007, as part of the EU-funded Interreg project IIIA “Trail construction and hiking info Nordwaldkammweg / Šumavská hřebenová cesta”, the Nordwaldkammweg was extended by the Waldviertel section to Pyhrabruck. In cooperation with the Czech tourist club, Nordwaldkammweg II was created as a return route via the Green Belt with variant III over the old starting point of the ridge path in Rozmberk an der Moldau.
The seventh day has another summit, the Mandelstein, on the way. Then it goes downhill to the Pyhrabruck border crossing with its Iron Curtain memorial. Here the Nordwaldkammweg ends and Nordwaldkammweg II begins. We are thus at the turning point. Right after Pyhrabruck comes a landscape of lakes in the Green Belt, leading into the charming town of Nove Hrady.
Accommodations, details about connecting paths, as well as the history of the Nordwaldkammweg and the region can be found in the new Nordwaldkammweg guidebook, which is available online through the publisher Pustet, in bookstores, at the tourism associations of the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel, and at some accommodations along the way.
Thanks to Michael Schwayda / ÖAV Horn for corrections to the Mandelstein approach from Harbach (December 2021).
For hiking the Nordwaldkammweg, there is the possibility to acquire a badge. For this, a stamp in the stamp book with confirmation including date and signature from the accommodation or tourist office is required at the control points. If no possibility for the stamp with confirmation exists, a selfie can be taken (GPS on and date displayed). If the hike is interrupted, the control point must be stamped again with the new date.

Roadbook
From the ÖAV-Nebelsteinhütte (1,000 m, N48° 40.373', E14° 46.730') the path leads steeply downhill to the east, crossing the marking of the trail around the Nebelstein, to Sagberg (850 m) and then along the Hirschenwiesenbach stream past Holzmühle to Harbach (683 m), known for its spa, which we see on a hill to the left of the path.
In front of us, we already see the Mandelstein; to the left, the road leads to the Czech Republic via Sejby to Dobra voda (connecting path V15). At altitude 719 m, we can finally leave the asphalt road again and climb through the forest to the Mandelstein. Be sure to plan some time to explore the Mandelstein Gate (red marking 8 minutes around the summit) and to admire the surroundings from the new viewing platform!
From the Mandelstein, the path goes always right along the border downhill through the forest to the Würgelhäuser and past a mill to Pyhrabruck (543 m), on bike path 1048.
At Pyhrabruck near Gmünd, the border to the Czech Republic is crossed for the first time, so we have reached the northernmost point of the Nordwaldkammweg. Right at the Pyhrabruck border station, on the Czech side, a memorial with barbed wire entanglement and an exhibition recall the Iron Curtain – Muzeum Skanzen ochrany státní hranice a železné opony (N48° 41.078', E14° 40.800'). From here, you can already see the next target area, Novohradske hory, the Gratzen Mountains. It is also not far to the Green Belt, which we get to know here for the first time, as well as to the old South Bohemian town Nove Hrady (3.5 km).
We follow the sparsely red-marked tank path south until it goes steeply downhill. Near the end of the descent, be careful! Quite inconspicuously, the red marking branches off to the right (N48° 46.650', E14° 48.349') into a driveway, which leads us to the Zevluv pond, an angler's paradise. Much has been renovated at the Mestsky Mlyn mill (reference point N48° 46.945', E14° 47.389'), from which it is not far to the bus station and the Nove Hrady castle. The place offers a few options to celebrate the 7th day – and thus half of the way. It may also be interesting in the evening to track down the 10 wooden figures / Drevene skulptury, which were created in 2006 at an international artists' meeting.
