Various areas of the Hofburg now serve as museums, in which, for example, the former imperial regalia of the Danube monarchs are on display. The living quarters of the former emperors, which house the Sisi Museum, are probably the most visited site of Austrian history. The Spanish Riding School is not a museum per se, but guided tours are also available here - or you can attend one of the performances, of course.
One of the two heroes after whom the square is named is Archduke Karl, whose monument was unveiled in 1860. The second monument, depicting Prince Eugene, was also completed in 1865. Heldenplatz is bordered on one side by the Outer Castle Gate, a monument to the soldiers who died in the Napoleonic Wars.
The Hofburg and Heldenplatz also have a dark history to tell, as it was here that Adolf Hitler announced the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938.
