Unlike other major cities, Vienna also offers extensive green spaces in the densely built downtown area. In addition to the Stadtpark, the grounds at Karlsplatz, around the Hofburg, and in front of the City Hall are popular destinations for many walkers and tourists.
One of Vienna's most important transport hubs, Karlsplatz, is located on the border between the 1st and 4th districts and has several underground levels. From the platforms of subway lines 1, 2, and 4, you reach the Opernring through long, well-signposted corridors and passages. Along the Ringstrasse, where we turn left, we find not only a hardly countable number of magnificent buildings but also wide open squares and garden areas. On the opera side, we soon stand before the Goethe Monument and the entrance to the Burggarten, which was created for the imperial family between 1817 and 1824. Former greenhouses in Secession style border the garden at the back; these now house a restaurant and the Butterfly House. The center of the Burggarten is a romantic pond; several monuments attract interest. At the left end of the massive facade of the New Hofburg, you can get through a side gate to the Heldenplatz.
