Eifelsteig (Aachen - Trier)
Where rock and water accompany you: The long-distance hiking trail leads 313 kilometers in 15 stages from the imperial city Aachen (Kornelimünster) to the Roman city of Trier.
In 15 stages (from 14 to 29 km), the Eifelsteig leads from the flat north near Aachen over the “High Fens”, through the lonely Rur valley, past impressive reservoirs, the “Eifel National Park” and over the limestone and the volcanic Eifel to the south Eifel and finally to Trier. In doing so, it reveals new scenic impressions to the hiker again and again on routes with a high proportion of earth trails, magnificent views and a variety of changes in formations.
Please consider when planning your stage hikes that meters or kilometers more from and to the hosts may be added to the given stage length.

Roadbook
The route begins in the historic town center of Kornelimünster on the outskirts of Aachen. Here the mountains are still hills and the path accompanies small streams to their source, the High Fens, a raised bog and water reservoir. The typical Fens landscape and the house-high beech hedges of the Monschau region characterize the first stages. It continues through the Eifel National Park with rock passages and mixed forests along the large reservoirs of the northern Eifel. The Eifelsteig leads up to the Dreiborn plateau with the deserted village of Wollseifen and the former Nazi training center Vogelsang. Along the Olef River and through small side valleys, the path reaches Steinfeld Abbey. Through floodplains and wetlands with rare plants and butterflies, it goes via Nettersheim to Blankenheim. The Ahr River springs in Blankenheim, but the Eifelsteig climbs the heights around Blankenheim. Here it passes through an extensive juniper area. Soon the Eifelsteig leaves North Rhine-Westphalia and continues inconspicuously in Rhineland-Palatinate territory. Soon you are in the middle of the Volcanic Eifel. 380-million-year-old dolomite rock, scenic volcanic peaks, and the famous Daun maars lie along the way. Through the Lieser valley it continues to Manderscheid. Here the ruins of the upper and lower castles rise from the valley. The Lieser path leads further into the Salm valley, past Himmerod Abbey southwards to the Kyll valley. Here the reddish sandstone shapes the landscape. Finally, the Eifelsteig ends on the heights above Germany’s oldest city, Trier.
