On the 3rd stage of the "Black Forest - Jura - Lake Constance" route, we hike from Immendingen on the Danube to Engen in the Hegau.

Immendingen on the Danube is known for the Danube sinking. The source rivers Brigach and Breg disappear completely for up to 150 days a year into the porous Jurassic limestone of the Swabian Alb and reappear only about twelve kilometers away at the Aachtopf. Their water then no longer flows to the Black Sea but via the Radolfzeller Aach to Lake Constance and finally via the High Rhine to the North Sea.

Geographically, Immendingen lies at the border to the Hegau, whose landscape is characterized by numerous tertiary volcanic mountains. The local poet Ludwig Finckh therefore called it the "Lord's bowling alley". The northernmost Hegau volcano is only about 3 km to the south. It is the Höwenegg. Its rock (basalt) was quarried until 1979 for road construction and transported in wagons to Immendingen, from where it was further transported by railway. In the process, the two still existing castle remains were largely destroyed. In the former quarry, a natural lake formed that appears picturesque like a crater lake. Numerous fossil finds during many ongoing excavation campaigns make the Höwenegg an Eldorado for paleontologists. Nearly complete skeletons of mammals (ancient horse hipparion, antelopes, hornless rhinoceros) have been recovered so far. The highest Hegau mountain is Neuhewen at 867 m.

At the end of the stage follows the picturesque town of Engen, whose old town is considered one of the most worthwhile to see in Germany.

    Author’s recommendation

In summer, a detour to the sinking points of the Danube east of Immendingen is worthwhile. Then you can cross the riverbed dry-shod.

    Roadbook

From Immendingen train station we follow Bahnhofstraße east to Donaustraße and the Lower Castle. On the right is the "Wehrwaage Immendingen". In 2001, the right part of the Danube weir was converted into a natural fish ramp. This made the weir passable for fish and small invertebrates. In the area of the Immendingen main sinking of the Danube, the Danube Shore Park was created – a short detour is worthwhile. We cross the Danube over a covered wooden bridge and continue on the "Unterer Ösch" path parallel to the railway tracks to the location "At the Danube sinking". Here a detour to the sinking points of the Danube is worthwhile. Together with the premium path "Danube sinking" the green diamond leads further to the Höwenegg main crater near Gundelhof. An information board explains the volcano and the fossil site. The green diamond then leads to the former Daxmill with the chapel from 1894. With a view of the Hegau mountains we reach Mauenheim, a district of Immendingen and the first bioenergy village in Baden-Württemberg. Immediately afterwards we leave the village again westwards towards the rest area "Kleine Reute". On the way there the magnificent view compensates for the paved ground: the view stretches over the Hegau mountains to Lake Constance and, with a bit of luck, to the Alps. At the location of the same name, we turn left to the small barbecue area "Im Winkel" and after the following left turn immediately enter the forest on the right, which dampens the traffic noise of the nearby motorway. Eventually, we must walk along the motorway and back a short stretch on the other side before Esplehauweg leads again through the forest to the location "Absetze". From here, it goes along the road frequented by bikers on weekends to the hiking parking lot Hegaublick at the European watershed of the Danube and Rhine. Below lies the restaurant Cafe Hegaublick, a popular meeting place for excursionists because of its famous view. To reach the actual "Hegaublick" we have to cross the busy intersection and follow the street to the location of the same name. At the foot of Neuhewen, it goes right on beautiful forest paths up to the highest of the Hegau mountains with the castle ruins. The former Stetten castle has been decaying for years. The grounds around the remains of the 13th-century castle are fenced off with high fences and NATO barbed wire. On the steady descent to Engen, we first reach its district Stetten. Through the "Stadtholz" we hike further to Zimmerholz and from there on paved paths to the stage destination, the train station in Engen.
